Caffè Florian

Caffè Florian, like Venice, Italy, itself, is magical and like no place else in the world. It’s beautiful and resilient, having survived high tides and political unrest for more than three centuries. Today, the gilded and plush café still enchants Venetians and visitors as it did in its very humble beginnings in the early 18th century. Bordering Piazza San Marcos (St. Mark’s Square) in the heart of Venice, Caffè Florian started in 1720 as a two-room coffeehouse owned by Floriano Francesconi. I recently gave a lecture in Hong Kong to a Chinese audience who were fascinated by the ritual of English afternoon tea. Many in attendance were planning on traveling to London in the future, and, of course, a posh afternoon tea is certain to be on their itineraries. As I planned for this talk, I was aware that my tea students might find the act of balancing a teacup—with its handles and saucer—as awkward as I found the mastering of eating chicken wings with chopsticks. To build confidence in my listeners, I edited my talk to the most basic skills. Butterscotch-Cashew Scones Makes 12 1½ cups self-rising flour ½ cup sprouted wheat flour 1/3 cup firmly packed dark brown sugar ¼ teaspoon kosher salt 6 tablespoons cold unsalted butter, cubed ½ cup butterscotch morsels ½ cup cashews, toasted and finely chopped ½ cup half-and-half 1 large egg, lightly beaten • Preheat oven to 400°. AN Amorous AFFAIR

An Accidental Collection

My passion for collecting teapots and drinking tea takes me back to my childhood. While growing up in New Orleans, we were a family of tea drinkers. My mom made basic Lipton tea on the stovetop in a pot with milk and plenty of sugar. Little did I know at the time how much I would be influenced by the warm memories of taking tea with my mom.
