CARL BEAN
Carl Bean, clergyman, activist, and singer, died September 7 in Los Angeles at age 77. Bean, a gay man, was archbishop of the LGBTQ-inclusive Unity Fellowship Church Movement, which he founded in 1985, also the year that he founded the Los Angeles-based Minority AIDS Project. Earlier, he was a gospel and R&B singer. In 1977, Motown released his recording of “I Was Born This Way,” with lyrics about pride in being gay; it’s credited with inspiring Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way.” Bean left the music industry, though, because Motown wanted him to record songs about opposite-sex love.
