As we head into the quieter summer months at The Explorers Club, I find myself reflecting on our remarkable flagship events in recent weeks. The eighth annual World Oceans Week, presented by Rolex, was hosted by “Her Deepness” Sylvia Earle and marine biologist David Gruber of Project CETI. They brought together ambassadors from around the globe to celebrate our life-giving seas while our unbeatable library and archives crew transformed headquarters into a veritable oceanic oasis. In addition, The Explorers Club hosted more than 30 early-career ocean professionals for a week of lectures and peer-to-peer sessions. There’s an inherent poetry in the language of pioneers—those who dare to chart paths not yet taken, who gaze at the world not as it is, but as it could, and should, be. Aviation pioneer Bertrand Piccard embodies this ethos. His vision heralds a new era of exploration, where the most compelling discoveries transcend the geographical to embrace the sustainable, moving beyond the physical to encompass the philosophical. To understand the roots of this pioneering spirit, one must look back at the lineage that shaped him.
