The recent announcements of thousands of layoffs from companies like Amazon and Meta mark “a revival of long-discredited corporate strategies” that could do far more damage to these companies down the line. Decades ago, executives at industrial giants like Boeing and General Motors could easily sell mass layoffs to shareholders. It seemed intuitive that “pruning payrolls could restore” the bottom line, and investors greeted such heartbreaking announcements “as a sign that corporate leaders were ‘taking the necessary steps.’” But numerous studies have since shown that the layoffs “had a negligible impact on profitability” in the years after restructuring. New data from Boston schools suggests that masking in the classroom slows the spread of Covid, reports The New York Times. All but two school districts in the greater Boston area lifted mask requirements last spring, so researchers were able to analyze the “natural experiment” and compare the masking and the nonmasking schools directly. They found that infection rates were significantly lower among the masked students. This was true even in Boston’s public schools, many of which have poor ventilation and more students from at-risk communities. Last week, the Biden administration asked the Supreme Court to intervene and lift the nationwide stay on his plan to cancel up to $20,000 per person in student debt, imposed by the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals days earlier. Hunger has been made worse by the war in Ukraine, which has raised global food prices, especially in countries that depend on Ukrainian imports.
