Istarted at Paragon in 1994 as a valeter. Back then, the 964 was just five years old, so early cars were leaving the dealer network to be sold and serviced by us – and cleaned by me. The 993 was launched that same year, of course, but the 964 still seemed very modern. Compared with SCs and 3.2 Carreras – our stock-in-trade at the time – it felt like the product of a different era. Fortunately it retained the classic 911 look, which kept customers happy. You won’t need us to point out that buying a 911 45 years ago would have entailed rather less in the way of hours spent poring over an options catalogue. Ticking the boxes for anti-roll bars, a five-speed gearbox and Fuchs wheels would no doubt have been tempting for many buyers, and these are all nice to find today. It’s been common knowledge for some time now that prices of classic Porsche have slowed down considerably in the last 18 months or so. After the great boom of 2013 to 2016, this was predicted: as many commentators explained, the market simply could not support such sharp, unprecedented increases in prices across the board. This levelling out of prices was therefore largely seen as a good thing, bringing some much-needed stability to proceedings. However, in the period since the start of the year, not only has the market slowed, but values have receded. HISTORY AND SPEC The story of the Touring goes all the way back to 1967 when Porsche expanded what had essentially been a single-model range. Both Uwe and Jürgen Alzen have an impressive record in motorsport. Uwe has a long history of success racing Porsche: he won the 1992 Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland followed by the 1994 Porsche Supercup, and placed second at Le Mans 1998 in a 911 GT1 – which he also raced in FIA GT.
