The most precious quickly found their way into homes, but early gardeners saw an opportunity for the overflow outdoors, along garden paths, mingling among the plants. IT WAS THE INTRICACIES OF FABRIC that first stirred painter Marie Daâge’s emotions for pattern. “As a child, I spent days and days in showrooms with my mother, a lover of decoration,” says the Paris-based porcelain visionary, who recently reinterpreted 18th-century gouache ikat paintings (like the sketch on the yellow dish) into decadent dessert plates. “I love the soft Baroque colors of silk and taffetas used in the Marie Antoinette period,” she notes of a palette that unfolds across the four dishes in the set. Greenwich, Connecticut A GRAND, FRENCH-STYLE home sat peacefully enough overlooking Greenwich Harbor—until landscape designer Kathryn Herman pulled the two-acre grounds into an enchanting exchange with the house and water. “We created a garden that was both French and American,” explains Herman, who built a series of outdoor rooms along the rear and sides of the house with all the signature Franco elements like tuteurs, hornbeam hedges, and rows of linden trees. “That formality is a direct response to the house,” says the landscape designer.
