What propels you to slip the lines and set sail? Freedom, escape, adventure, or peace, perhaps. Given the time, money and effort you can pour into yacht cruising, quite aside from the not-infrequent discomfort of bad weather, something pretty compelling must motivate us to keep going.
The Hoiland family, in their article this month (p66), feel a call to voyage through French Polynesia, in search of something unknown, intangible. Despite the beauty of the South Seas, however, they often find themselves if not unhappy, then mildly disappointed that they haven’t yet found cruising paradise. It reminded me of sailors I’ve met who have sailed the world but never quite find what they’re looking for.
If we go off looking for paradise, are we setting ourselves up for disappointment? Perhaps no…
