Black Magic This thatch work of black fibers can do wonders. Carbon fiber has become one of the hottest new materials in yacht construction. It’s light. It’s super-strong. And just having an accent of this material aboard lends your yacht real panache. AZIMUT VERVE 40 MEETS THE MASSES Azimut Yachts recently introduced a new style of vessel for the brand to the U.S. market: the Verve 40. She’s a triple 350 hp, outboard-powered walkaround day-tripper with overnight accommodations for four people. She’s fast too, with a reported 37-knot cruise speed and a top end in the mid-40s. The builder has produced more than 100 custom yachts so far, including several 101-foot motoryachts. The 28- and 38-footers were headed for Bermuda, and they were shockingly small racing yachts by the standards of the time. At the turn of that century, 120-to 130-foot America’s Cup yachts were the ocean-racing legends people knew by name — Defender, Vigilant, Columbia — yachts they read about in newspapers that left their fingers stained with ink, yachts that were always manned by professional crew, and that lay beyond the grasp of a public who thirsted for more. MANY YACHTS boast eco chops because they have a handful of solar panels that power the microwave or navigation lights. The Solarwave 64, launched last summer, has the potential to run on sunshine alone. The vessel’s 42 solar panels generate 15 kW that are stored in batteries weighing about 1,300 pounds.
