I am excited to introduce the members of our first-ever Young Rider reader advisory board. We had so much fun reading all of the applications—and there were lots of them! We were blown away by your creativity, talent and stories. Thanks to everyone who applied. Archer has owned Sundance since June 2016. They compete in halter, showmanship, speed events and pleasure classes. He loves Sundance and says they get along great—she’s sweet, funny and has a great personality. One of the favorite things he and Sundance did was to enter a costume class at the fair. They dressed up as the cow that jumped over the moon—it was quite a sight! Archer and Sundance take riding lessons once a week, and Archer is looking forward to showing on his middle school equestrian team. Kennedy has been riding Merlin for about a year and a half. The next time you open a bag of horse feed, examine what’s inside. There’s probably some corn, oats, vitamins and minerals. Then think about why all of those ingredients are there. It was the job of an equine nutritionist to study what a horse needs to stay healthy and then to figure out how to provide a balanced diet. An Equine Nutritionist at Work At Purina, Katie Young, Ph.D., works as an equine nutritionist. “In my job, I help develop new formulas for Purina horse feeds,” says Katie. Other nutritionists there work in the research and development department, studying feeds for horses with different needs. I have a lot of goals for myself and Artie this year. We are looking forward to improving our skills in lessons and some schooling shows, but what I’m most excited about is joining my barn’s quadrille team—something brand new to both of us! Feeling the Cold QUESTION: How can I tell if my horse is cold, and what’s the best way to keep him warm in the winter? ANSWER: Horses do very well in cold temperatures, provided they are used to them and have a good winter coat, good teeth, enough body fat, and enough hay to eat. A horse that has poor teeth, is body clipped, older, thin, or has recently moved from a warmer climate will probably need to be blanketed and given extra grain and concentrates. If your horse is shivering or losing weight in the winter, he’s too cold! In cold temperatures, it’s very important that your horse has an adequate supply of good-quality hay. Don’t let your horsey life stop at the stables! Bring the barn to your bedroom with these super cool horsey ideas. Start by selecting a color palette that suits your personality to decorate your room. A color palette is a set of colors that complement each other. Not everything has to match perfectly as long as you pick from the same family of colors. For this bedroom, we chose the following color palette based on a bright floral fabric found at the local craft store: peony pink, salmon, cranberry, yellow and teal. Paige Age 12 I’m obsessed with horses. I’m a horse addict! As I look around my room I see posters, newspaper articles, ribbons, and plushes of them. The only thing missing is a horse of my own, but I have been able to ride through lessons and leasing. I love horses because they are more than just a willing animal. Horses represent strength, courage, compassion, loyalty, and much more. When I am riding I feel free, powerful, and confident. They make me less afraid of big challenges. Explaining to people who aren’t horse lovers that riding is a real sport can be hard. How many times have you heard “the horse does all the work” or “riding doesn’t LOOK hard.” Comments like that are so frustrating! Here are some thoughts on how you can combat the “neigh”-sayers. REMIND THEM THAT RIDING IS IN THE OLYMPICS. Sports that are represented in the Olympics are notoriously difficult to perfect.
