It was a mixed bag with the women’s vested tri suits this year, some wowing with innovation and comfort-driven design while others fell a little short. Trimtex and 2XU dazzled with their stylish lines and ample easy-access pockets, though we were disappointed with the quality in some areas. We liked the lightweight, seamless feel of the Tenola and Castelli for shorter distances; the former promising some funky tan-lines. Coming top for comfort would have to be the Castelli, though – the well-thought out suit and luxurious leg grippers had us at ‘laser-cut’. As an all-rounder, though, the Speedo was hard to beat. Increasing your cadence – how many times you stride each minute – is a proven way to become a more efficient triathlete, and thanks to training-tool advancements, watches, such  as the Garmin Forerunner 745, now automatically measure cadence. Of course, measuring cadence and actively doing something with that information are two very different things, but one thing’s clear: there’s no optimum cadence at any level; each triathlete is different and has a different cadence range. But ultimately, the shorter the race, the higher the cadence because you’ll be running at a faster pace. The pandemic must have been so tough for all junior and U23 athletes. I know if the pandemic had hit us in 1998 when I was a last-year junior, I don’t think I’d have turned pro. It was my breakthrough year, winning silver at the Europeans, several ETU Cup podia and all finished off with a junior world title. I think so many young athletes might not have that opportunity. THE INCREDIBLE HOYTS I’ve never written to a magazine before but felt compelled too following the death of Dick Hoyt. I’m not an experienced triathlete but I’ve spent years running. It’s where I came across the Hoyt story. An American friend of mine ran the Boston Marathon in 2014. It was her first Boston, which is a magical moment for any sports person, but all she could talk about were the amazing Hoyts. This first session is aimed around improving your endurance ability, the ability to swim a little faster or a little longer – helping make that overall time in the water just a little shorter! It’s very much based around changing pace; the benefit here being that when you come to race, theoretically most of the swimming will be reasonably smooth apart from around any turns. There were no losers in this year’s rundown of men’s vested tri-suits, and we’d consider using any in a race… when that precious time comes! Yonda’s Argento Performance just missed out on the top marks because of some sizing inconsistencies and a slightly less comfortable experience than others on test. Huub’s Raceline and Zone3’s Activate both offered similar levels of comfort and performance, with Zone3 coming out on top for the nicer price. At the start of the race, I was very confident that I was going to win, but when it was time to get into the water I got a bit nervous. There were a lot of people and I didn’t know how good they were. Swimming is my weakest discipline as I don’t have a swim coach and there are no swimming pools in [my hometown] Goma, so my only option is to swim in Lake Kivu. Short sleeves, or the ‘traditional’ fully sleeveless tri-suit? There are pros and cons to both, with many elites and an increasing number of age-groupers deciding nowadays that the claimed aero benefits and sleeker appearance of short-sleeved suits are a better investment. Even so, we still see pros rolling their short-sleeved suits down to the waist for the swim, before putting them on fully in T1 during long-course races, so clearly some still appreciate more freedom of movement under their wetsuits. It’s here where the benefits of a vested suit come in, as for shorter races it’s probably not worth the time you’ll lose in T1 pulling the rest of your suit up on the go; plus, it’s not allowed in races held under British Triathlon rules. Finally, it was time for running! Running is my favourite discipline and I was well prepared for the course. I’m the captain of my running team, Mangwele, in Goma, and I know I’m a strong runner. I hadn’t had anything to drink during the bike leg so when I changed into my running gear I realised I was very thirsty.
