When decorating, white is a colour that can be used in any style of interior from a Georgian farmhouse to an ultra-modern apartment. In this month’s issue, we have some beautifully designed homes that range from being completely white to ones with just a pop of colour added. The key to making an all-white interior work is to introduce texture then layer it with other materials, such as mirrored glass and metals. By adding interest through fabrics and flooring as well as accessories, you will stop your room feeling as if it is full of hard surfaces. While dashes of colour will always draw the eye, be careful that they don’t become distracting. A good example of where colour and texture has been used to lift a white scheme is…

Drawn to a warehouse aesthetic, Bobi and James Carley boldly renovated the ground floor of their Victorian semi, transforming it from a traditional space into a practical, contemporary open-plan living area. This dramatic alteration had a knock on effect on the style of the rest of their London home. ‘Over the last decade, we had taken down walls between the kitchen, dining and playroom, but that left us with awkward pillars and a disjointed living space,’ Bobi explains. ‘We wanted to be completely open-plan, and we love bare brickwork and industrial design, so painting the exposed steel beams and tweaking the space a little worked brilliantly.’ The Carleys’ house has evolved over the years to meet the needs of their daughters, Mia, now 13, Megan, 11, and Bodie, 8. At…

The Napolitanos had been looking for a bolthole as an antidote to their busy lives in Toronto when they came across a brick bungalow on a well-presented plot just an hour’s drive north of their home. Equally suited to long summer escapes as to winter skiing at nearby Mount St Louis Moonstone, the location was ideal, but the building was less appealing. ‘We had already self-built our existing home, so we weren’t too fazed by the idea of knocking down and starting again,’ says Jodi, a…
Jane and Roy Davison had rented a holiday home in Manhattan Beach, in the South Bay area of Los Angeles for several summers, but had always dreamed of finding the perfect place to buy. ‘We were living in West Hollywood at the time and had looked at dozens of properties by the ocean over the years, but none of them fitted the bill,’ explains Jane. Then fate took a hand. ‘Our friend and builder Matt Morris was selling a plot, just a few blocks from the waterfront, so we decided to build our own home instead.’ The couple already knew Matt’s building work and liked it, so they took him on as the contractor, alongside a local architect. They decided to delegate the décor to interior designers Joe Lucas and…
