For most of the summer, we don’t draw the curtains in our house as we’re not overlooked. Which is fine when you have decorated a room and left the window bare while you decide what to do. But, as the nights have darkened, I needed to decide pretty quickly about one particular window. We previously had curtains, but I opted to replace it with a Roman blind with a simple box pelmet, and fabric that introduces subtle pattern into the space. Fabric curtains or blinds add softness, as well as helping to deaden the noise in rooms with lots of hard surfaces. A window treatment can make or break a scheme, it can be too overpowering or block out too much light, so thought is needed. Thankfully, each month there…

When Alina and James Triggs decided to swap their London apartment for a bigger property, they were certain that they didn’t want to take on a project. But as is so often the case, when it comes to property hunting, their search unearthed quite the opposite of what they were looking for. Instead, they came across an unloved Victorian home that had been turned into two flats. ‘We realised that if we wanted something to tick all the boxes, we might just have to take on a renovation,’ says Alina. Fortunately, this laid-back couple were undaunted by the scope of work needed to turn the building back into a vibrant family home. With the help of architects Ursula Tucker and Melanie Whittington, they cooked up a thoughtful plan that would…
It was a whirlwind romance for Rebekah and Nathan Horner who met, married and bought a house together in the space of a year. The couple now have a two-year-old daughter, Jaime, and have spent the last few years renovating a dated three-bedroom semi in York. ‘When we met, I was working in Oxford and living in the Cotswolds while Nathan was renting a terraced house in York and commuting to his job in Leeds,’ says Rebekah. ‘As I had no ties to Oxford and fancied a change of scenery, I moved to York a week before we got married. Nathan fancied a project, as he’d previously renovated houses in Hull and Nottingham, so I left house-hunting to him.’ After viewing six or seven houses, they visited a 1930s home…

But when she started searching for a forever home – working as an army GP meant living in a military quarter – she hadn’t considered the New Forest at all. ‘I was looking in north Hampshire and spotted this place for sale at auction,’ says Sarah. ‘Perhaps it was because it was August and there weren’t many people bidding but I walked away realising I’d just bought the most amazing…
