For Marlene Hurley Marshall, living with nature means more than just appreciating what’s outside the window. When the artist, who grew up in Boston, found herself in a 200-year-old farmhouse surrounded by acres of forest, she saw a seasonal bounty to incorporate into her work. She says, “I discovered a rich history of other artists and craftspeople inspired by nature.… I could see so many new possibilities for the baskets I filled with natural materials gathered from the woods.” Tree bark, lichen, leaves, feathers and other natural elements found in places like the Adirondacks become garlands, picture frames, bird-feeder hats, wreaths, fairy houses, centerpieces and other creations. Marshall’s book, Woodland Style, features page after page of these whimsical works of art.
