On 3 February 1959 Buddy Holly, singer of the number-one song That’ll be the Day, was killed when his plane crashed during bad weather. He was just 22. Holly, as well as his vocal talents, was also recognised for his distinctive dress sense and style. In particular, his large glasses had become something of a trademark.
According to The Wall Street Journal, the distinctive frames were chosen for Holly by Dr Davis Armistad. Originally Holly had picked out frames that were thinner and more discrete, but it was after seeing Phil Silvers’ comic portrayal of Sergeant Bilko, wearing thick heavy-set frames, that Armistad realised Holly needed something similar.
