Son of another of the Tetrarchy, Maximian, and Eutropia, of Syrian Greek heritage, Maxentius had the backing of the Senate, but not his fellow rulers when he was nominated to rule. The civil conflict that followed divided the Tetrarchy and having been defeated, made Maxentius the last Roman emperor to have his residence in Rome.
