Today, women’s football is one of the fastest-growing sports in the world, with international matches drawing massive crowds and some of its star players becoming household names. But the story of women’s football has been a turbulent one. In many nations, Britain included, women were banned from using association football-affiliated facilities, and it took until 1991 for FIFA to hold its first sanctioned Women’s World Cup in China.
