Backstage at Issey Miyake’s spring show, makeup artist Alex Box had drinking straws alongside the brushes in her kit for a technique she called “blow motion”—using your breath to create organic shapes with pigment. She had models lie down on the floor and close their eyes. Pop music is a complicated beast. The Music Industrial Complex churns out interchangeable singers of sugary fluff— blank slates of someone else’s creation. And then there is British singer Ellie Goulding. Unlike many of her peers, Goulding is not manufactured—she’s of no one’s making but her own.
