In 1958, Townsend Whelen wrote a book called On Your Own in the Wilderness with Bradford Angier. As the title suggests, the main topic of this wonderful book is true wilderness camping, and it’s written by men who have certainly been there. There are chapters dealing with tents and tent stoves, the campfire, outdoor tools, pothunting, furs and rawhide, provisioning, cooking, water and many other topics.
There’s also a plethora of information regarding the Whelen tent. Colonel Whelen was the authority—after all, he perfected it and spent over 400 nights in his!
