As you read this issue, you may feel the pangs of nostalgia. Granted, I often feel that way while curating the news and articles for this magazine, but those feelings were even more pronounced while creating this edition. I suspect the first hint came with the question that was posed to our online fans a while back. The response was amazing. LOS ANGELES (AP) – The typewriter Hugh Hefner used in college was the top-selling item at an auction of the Playboy magazine founder’s possessions. Julien’s Auctions says the Underwood Standard portable typewriter sold for $162,500. His complete set of Playboy magazines sold for $76,800, and a gold ring with a hidden compartment containing a Viagra pill sold for $22,400. Hefner’s iconic smoking jacket fetched $41,600. Hefner was 91 when he died in September 2017. The auction took place Dec. 1-2 in Los Angeles. The proceeds will benefit the Hugh M. Hefner Foundation, which defends civil rights and civil liberties.…

DALLAS – Heritage Auctions has announced that Mark Wilson, a collector and dealer of comics and comic art for more than three decades, has joined its comics department as a consignment director. “Mark brings a vast wealth of knowledge to our Comics Department,” Heritage Auctions Co-Founder Jim Halperin said. “He is one of those lucky ones who was able to turn a passion that started during his childhood into his career. NEW YORK (AP) – Fans of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” know that the show’s clothes deliver eye-popping color and to-die-for style, but they might not know the costumes represent more than 1950s culture. They also meticulously reflect each character’s mood and development. Costume designer Donna Zakowska said she thought about how each character changed from season one of the hit show to season two, which premiered on Amazon Prime Video in December. Zakowska started out studying painting at Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, which instilled a “very strong response to color,” she said in a recent interview, and that influenced her approach in costume design. The folks who put this publication together have broken the mold of the old, comfortable notion of what an antiques publication should look like, no doubt startling some and pleasantly surprising a great many more. Taking direction from this new approach, perhaps we can now put to rest another comfortable old notion about how to take care of furniture – the role of oil in the care and feeding of antiques. In the late 1980s the Journal of the American Institute for Conservation published an article about the contents of historical furniture finishes. LOS ANGELES (AP) – The great-grandson of a Jewish woman who surrendered her priceless Camille Pissarro painting to escape the Holocaust watched Dec. 4 as his lawyer relentlessly grilled officials of the Spanish museum where it now hangs, expressing incredulity that they didn’t know it was Nazi looted art. Members of the museum’s legal and research team, including some who were there when the painting “Rue St.-Honore, Apres-Midi, Effet de Pluie” was acquired in 1992, insisted due diligence was done. LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) – The developers of Lincoln’s downtown Telegraph District beat out-of-state competitors to buy a collection of hundreds of telephone-related artifacts dating back to the genesis of the now-indispensable technology. Financial services company Nelnet, real estate company Speedway Properties, Thomas C. Woods IV and the Woods Charitable Fund announced that they had purchased the Frank H. Woods Telephone Pioneer Museum collection, including antique walnut phones and candlestick telephones, The Lincoln Journal Star reported. NEW YORK (AP) – A 1954 letter written by Albert Einstein and known as the “God letter” because he discussed his thoughts about God and religion has fetched close to $2.9 million at an auction in New York. The letter, which was sold at Christie’s Dec. 4, was written the year before the Nobel prize-winning physicist’s death. It was addressed to philosopher Eric Gut-kind, who had written a book about Jewish spirituality and the pursuit of science. In the letter, Einstein declared, “The word God is for me nothing more than the expression and product of human weaknesses, the Bible a collection of honorable but still primitive legends.” Einstein was constantly questioned about his religious beliefs during his lifetime. HARRISBURG, Pa. – Cordier Auctions, of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, held its fall Antique and Fine Art Auction Nov. 10-11. The sale featured nearly 600 lots of antiques and luxury goods from all collecting categories. Early examples of American craftsmanship and artistry were well-received by bidders. An intricately decorated tall case clock by master clockmaker Simon Willard, featuring a rocking ship-automaton to the arch, sold for $9,000, while an 18th century Pennsylvania Windsor settee brought $5,000. The settee was one of several pieces consigned by the Rutherford House in Harrisburg. VINCENNES, Ind. (AP) – In September of 1967, Red Skelton wrote a letter to his then wife, Georgia – as he so often did – expressing some thoughts he had about patriotism. When I began digging in Tonopah and Goldfield, Nevada, more than 45 years ago, I found an abundance of a certain type of bottle: the whiskey flask.
