BECKLEY, W.Va. (AP) – Nearly 37 years ago, critically acclaimed photographer Builder Levy stepped into a Stotesbury home and captured an image that would capture the heart of Appalachia. It was a Sunday morning, Memorial Day weekend, and Levy – working on the advice of the late journalist Paul Nyden – had set out to document life in the racially diverse Raleigh County coal town. MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) – New Hampshire’s Currier Museum of Art is celebrating its 100th anniversary. On Feb. 19, 1919, the state Legislature voted to officially create the “Currier Gallery of Art.” The museum was the dream of New Hampshire’s 49th governor, Moody Currier, and his wife, Hannah. They left their estate to set up a museum for the benefit of the public. The museum will hold a gala event on Saturday, March 30. Proceeds will help fund free community art programs for the public. Since its creation, the museum has welcomed more than a million visitors and displayed internationally significant works of art.…

ROME (AP) — The first-ever scientific study of the oldest known drawing by Leonardo da Vinci has found that he added details to an earlier sketch of a countryside landscape, said the Uffizi Galleries, whose collections include the fragile work. The Galleries said the 1473 “Landscape Drawing for Santa Maria della Neve” was taken on Jan. 17 to a Florence restoration laboratory for study, which began right away with microscopic examination. Aided by sophisticated, non-invasive instruments, such as infrared light, the experts scrutinized the front of the drawing. Later they will study the back, where there is a sketch of a human figure, the prestigious Florence art museum said in a statement. DALLAS – An unopened copy of Super Mario Bros., the classic video game released by Nintendo in 1985, set a world record for a graded game when it recently sold for $100,150. “Beyond the artistic and historical significance of this game is its supreme state of preservation,” said Kenneth Thrower, co-founder and chief grader of Wata Games. Due to its popularity, Nintendo reprinted Super Mario Bros. from 1985 to 1994 numerous times, resulting in 11 different box variations. BEVERLY, Mass. — Two John Millard Ferren abstract plaster reliefs stole the show at the Kaminski Auctions sale Feb. 3, 2019. Internet and telephone bidding was lively; competition for the two pieces that were signed and dated 1937 was intense. Over 50 bids were recorded on Kaminski Live alone, for the abstract work numbered no. 29 (shown right), which drove the lot to $58,000, against an estimate of $20,000-$30,000. The second John Millard Ferren plaster relief numbered No. 33 (shown far right), was bid to $44,000 against an estimate of $40,000-$60,000 with 26 bids recorded. The two abstract reliefs were most likely a product of John Millard Ferren’s (1905-1970) time in Paris where he studied informally at the Sorbonne and several art academies. NEW YORK (AP) — From early Tupperware containers to Chemex coffee makers to sleek midcentury modern furniture, a new show at the Museum of Modern Art explores the democratizing and uplifting potential of design in everyday life. “The Value of Good Design” opened Feb. 10 and runs through June 15 at the museum, which is preparing to close its doors temporarily this summer before opening a newly expanded campus later in the year. The exhibit takes a fresh look at everything from domestic furnishings and appliances to ceramics, glass, electronics, transport design, sporting goods, toys and graphics. WASHINGTON (AP) — Heirs of a renowned Jewish art collector won’t be able use U.S. courts to sue Hungary’s government for the return of paintings seized during World War II that are worth millions. The Supreme Court on Jan. 7 said it wouldn’t take the case. That means an appeals court ruling that Hungary is immune from being sued in U.S. courts over the paintings stands. The family of Baron Mor Lipot Herzog is still pursuing a case in the United States against three museums and a university all run by Hungary. The family says those institutions together hold about 40 pieces that were Herzog’s but confiscated by Hungary, a wartime ally of Nazi Germany. The family unsuccessfully tried suing in Hungary before suing in the U.S. in 2010.…

FORT SMITH, Ark. (AP) – The planned opening of the U.S. Marshals Museum in Fort Smith has been pushed back to next year. The facility was set to open this fall. But museum President Patrick Weeks says officials couldn’t plan for the opening without knowing the results of next month’s special election in Fort Smith, when voters will consider a temporary sales tax increase to support the museum. The special election on the nine-month tax is March 12. If approved, it’s expected to generate about $15.5 million. According to the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, Weeks says the museum will still be dedicated Sept. 24, which coincides with the 230th anniversary of the U.S. Marshals Service. Museum officials have estimated that the museum will have an annual economic impact of $15 million to…

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) – The University of Michigan Museum of Natural History is planning to reopen to the public in April in its new building. The Ann Arbor school says new exhibits will be on display in the museum, which combines natural history with scientific research. The museum, which is part of the university’s College of Literature, Science, and the Arts, closed in December 2017. It moved from its previous home in the Ruthven Building to its current location in the new $261 million Biological Sciences Building. The public opening date is set for April 14. Sweet on Log Cabin syrup mementos — Recently I’ve been going over some past issues of your fine news magazine’s “Favorite Finds” editions and I found the 2016 issue which had an article on “Towle’s Log Cabin” spoons, an advertising give-away promotion item. In 1887 P.J. Towle and his partner were grocers in St. Paul, Minnesota and weren’t happy with the corn syrup and sugar cane molasses people (customers) were then dipping out of the big barrel in the store. Towle decided he could make one he liked better, so he went to Vermont and Canada maple syrup he found there and Louisiana sugar cane until he came up with a combination he REALLY liked. HELENA, Mont. (AP) – A legal challenge over the ownership of valuable dinosaur fossils unearthed on an eastern Montana ranch has prompted legislation seeking to clarify that fossils are part of a property’s surface rights, not its mineral rights. Supporters told the state House Natural Resources Committee on Feb. 6 that federal agencies and state lands policies differentiate between minerals and fossils – and it’s time state law followed suit. A three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled in November that the fossils of two dinosaurs that appeared to have been locked in battle when they died are made up of minerals and are part of the property’s mineral estate, which is partially owned by brothers Jerry and Bo Severson. ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Greek police have confiscated over a hundred antiquities allegedly excavated by grave robbers and arrested a man suspected of trying to sell them for 600,000 euros ($682,000). A police statement says the Greek suspect was arrested Jan. 17 in the southern town of Gytheio following a tip-off. Tuesday’s statement said the objects included 85 intact clay pots and gold, marble, copper and lead artefacts dating to around the 3rd century B.C. They probably came from an ancient cemetery and were found in the 46-year-old suspect’s car. All ancient artefacts found in the antiquities-rich country are deemed state property. Private possession is only allowed by registered collectors who can tap a limited pool of works from older collections. However, there is a black market in illegally excavated…

BERLIN (AP) – A Banksy painting that shocked onlookers as it partially shredded itself after being sold at auction is going on display in Germany. The Frieder Burda museum in Baden-Baden said Feb. 4 that “Girl with Balloon,”which self-destructed last year after an unidentified European collector successfully bid $1.4 million at a Sotheby’s auction, will be shown through March 3. The painting, retitled “Love is in the Bin” after the shredding, will then be moved to the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart museum on permanent loan. “Girl With Balloon,” which depicts a small child reaching up toward a heart-shaped red balloon, was originally stenciled on a wall in east London and has been endlessly reproduced, becoming one of Banksy’s best-known images.…

Hundreds of customers braved the cold to invade the Bricker Building at the Ohio Expo Center Jan. 26-27 for a new Scott Antique Markets adventure. Shoppers browsed through thousands of unique items available for sale Saturday and Sunday. In one row customers flipped through vintage multiplication flash cards, tried on jewelry in various animal shapes, looked at a stack of mirrors and picked out various kitchen items.
