Being a city boy, I’d never seen a live pig, and I had no idea what a poke was. But the proverb must have rung true because it stuck in my head and popped back out this morning. SCRANTON, Pa. (AP) — In the basement of City Hall, leather-bound volumes kept behind glass contain source records, after-action reports and regimental histories of the Civil War, from the first shots fired at Fort Sumter to the Confederate capitulation at Appomattox Court House. NEW YORK (AP) — A prominent New York City art dealer once accused by Alec Baldwin of fraud was sentenced to 2 1/2 years in prison Feb. 14 for evading over $3 million in federal taxes, a crime that left her rejected in some art circles and saying she feels like a pariah. Mary Boone, 66, dropped her face into open hands as U.S. District Judge Alvin K. Hellerstein announced the sentence in a Manhattan courtroom packed with supporters, many of them artists. ARASOTA, Fla. (AP) — Police in Florida want to know who spray-painted “#MeToo” on the leg of a statue depicting a sailor and a dental assistant kissing at the end of World War II. Sarasota police said in a news release that officers found the phrase painted in red on the left leg of the woman in the “Unconditional Surrender” statue in Sarasota early Feb. 19. The paint covered the length of the nurse’s leg. Police said officers didn’t find any spray paint bottles in the area. No other objects were defaced. Authorities estimate the damage to the statue at more than $1,000. They say the incident occurred sometime Monday afternoon or evening [Feb. 18]. CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — The board governing North Carolina’s public universities is giving itself more time to decide the fate of a Confederate statue toppled by protesters. The Board of Governors is now expected to receive recommendations for the statue in May, two months later than previously planned, according to an email by board Chairman Harry Smith. Smith had previously asked five members to develop and submit a plan to the full board by March 15. The email from Smith announcing the extension was released Tuesday. It says the team needs more time to do its work but doesn’t give further explanation. AMSTERDAM (AP) — For the first time, and likely the last, the Rijksmuseum [https://www.rijksmuseum.nl/en] in Amsterdam is showing off all of its works by Rembrandt van Rijn in a single exhibition. From imposing portraits to intimate sketches and prints that usually lie safely cocooned in climate-controlled storage, the Amsterdam museum is exhibiting 22 paintings, 60 drawings and 300 of its best etchings in the blockbuster show. The museum actually owns 1,300 prints, but is showing only the best in the exhibition, “All the Rembrandts,” that opened Feb. 15. ORONO, Maine (AP) — A Maine man who is part of a long tradition of basket makers in a native American tribe has received a prestigious fellowship and its $50,000 award. Thirty-eight-year-old Gabriel Frey is a Passamaquoddy basket maker from Orono known for adding flourishes of color and other notes of personal expressions to traditional Indian work baskets. The Portland Press Herald reports he is the latest artist from Maine to win a United States Artists fellowship for his work. The cash prize is unrestricted, which means Frey can use the money as he wishes. Frey says he works as a massage therapist and makes baskets on his own time, so the money is life-changing. BOSTON (AP) — Letters written behind bars by notorious Boston gangster James “Whitey” Bulger have sold for as much as $1,430 at an auction. The letters auctioned Feb. 24 provide a glimpse into Bulger’s life behind bars before he was killed by fellow inmates last year. The letters were written to a man Bulger met in prison. The auction house says the six letters fetched between $845 and $1,430 each. In the letters, Bulger longingly recalled his old days at Alcatraz, complained about the gentrification of his old neighborhood and discussed how other inmates would try to push his wheelchair when he passed. Bulger was beaten to death in October shortly after being transferred to a prison in West Virginia. He was serving a life sentence for participating in 11…

PHOENIX (AP) — Three Arizona residents are among seven people charged with fraudulently selling jewelry imported from the Philippines as authentic Native American-made items. A federal grand jury in Phoenix returned a 38-count indictment that alleges none of these jewelry items were indelibly marked with the country of origin as required by customs law. They say 70-year-old Richard Dennis Nisbet of Peoria and his 31-year-old daughter Laura Marye Lott conspired with others to design and manufacture the jewelry in the Philippines and import it to the United States. Lott then allegedly delivered the jewelry to retail stores in Arizona, Texas and other states and collected payments. Prosecutors say 43-year-old Scottsdale jewelry store owner Waleed Sarrar conspired with Nisbet, Lott and others to pass off imitation jewelry manufactured abroad as authentic…

BOSTON (AP) — The John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum in Boston has received a $1.5 million gift from Raytheon to help commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing. Kennedy famously challenged the nation in 1961 to land a man on the moon by the end of that decade. Astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin took the first steps on the lunar surface on July 20, 1969. The JFK library plans a yearlong celebration of the Apollo program, featuring a “virtual replica” of the Saturn V rocket and a downloadable app for users to experience their own missions through augmented reality. BETHEL, N.Y. (AP) — A bass guitar and handwritten song lyrics will be among the artifacts related to the original Woodstock concert heading to a museum for display. When I was in junior high school the hard-case English teacher who took pleasure in terrorizing all eighth graders assigned us the daunting task of writing our autobiography. The world famous Brimfield and Collectibles Show is now 60 years old. The Brimfield antiques fair traces its beginnings to innovative Brimfield resident and auctioneer Gordon Reid. In 1959, sixty-seven dealers gathered on Reid’s route 20 property, aptly called “Auction Acres.” Gordon and his wife Madelyn envisioned Brimfield as the antiques’ center of the nation, and during his lifetime, the dream reached fruition. LONDON (AP) — British novelist Rosamunde Pilcher, whose family saga “The Shell Seekers” sold millions of copies around the world, has died, her agent said Feb. 7. She was 94. Pilcher’s literary agency, Felicity Bryan Associates, said she died overnight at a hospital in Dundee, Scotland after a short illness. Her son Robin Pilcher told the Guardian newspaper his mother suffered a stroke following a bout of bronchitis. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Thieves broke into a Southern California gallery in early February, pilfering artwork depicting Charlie Brown and other characters from the iconic comic strip “Peanuts.” The Los Angeles Times reports a security guard patrolling an open-air mall in Costa Mesa discovered a glass door smashed at the Chuck Jones Gallery the morning of Feb. 14. Scott Dicken, vice president of retail sales for the gallery’s parent company, says the break-in occurred when the mall was closed. He says no other art was taken. The gallery’s owner has priced the three stolen pieces at $7,900. NEW YORK (AP) — Jerry Seinfeld was sued Feb. 1 by a company claiming it bought the comedian’s 1958 Porsche for $1.5 million only to discover it was a fake. Fica Frio Limited’s lawsuit was filed in Manhattan federal court against a comic known for his love of vintage cars. Seinfeld mixes his affection for fancy vehicles with his love of comedy in his series “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee.” The lawsuit said Fica Frio’s representatives paid $1.54 million at a March 2016 auction in Amelia Island, Florida. LAKE GEORGE, N.Y. (AP) — Archaeology work has been wrapped up at an upstate New York construction site where the skeletal remains of several people have been found at what’s believed to be a Revolutionary War burial ground. State archaeologists led by the New York State Museum were at the site last week in Lake George, in the southern Adirondacks. A work crew unearthed skeletal remains Feb. 7, while excavating an empty lot for an apartment house. Work was halted, and experts were summoned to examine the property for more remains. Officials say as the bones of as many as a dozen people have been recovered and taken to the State Museum in Albany for analysis. DECATUR, Ga. (AP) — Vandals splashed paint on a Confederate monument, a nearby World War I cannon, and another cannon near Atlanta. A spokeswoman for the city of Decatur tells the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that the vandalism was discovered Feb. 3 and almost all the paint was cleaned off the next day. The Confederate monument is a 30-foot-tall obelisk. It was splashed with red paint. Blue paint was thrown onto the World War I cannon, on the other side of the Old County Courthouse in Decatur Square. The second cannon was splashed with green paint. The county commission has been trying for more than a year to move the obelisk from the square, but its options are limited by state law. KENNER, La. (AP) — A former manager of a post office in a New Orleans suburb has admitted to stealing more than $630,000 in stamps and selling them online to support his gambling addiction, prosecutors said. Ryan Cortez, 46, pleaded guilty on Friday to misappropriation of postal funds in one of the largest internal postal thefts in U.S. Postal Service history, news outlets reported, citing a statement that U.S. Attorney Peter Strasser’s Office released Tuesday. Cortez was a manager at the North Kenner Post Office. Authorities had a warrant to search the Des Allemands resident’s home in October and arrested him after they found evidence connecting him to the ordering of the stamps. ELKO, Nev. (AP) — A northeastern Nevada ranch once owned by Bing Crosby is for sale for $7,280,000. The Elko Daily Free Press reported that the Lawson Ranch was one of several properties the late singer and movie star owned in the area in the 1940s and 1950s. Crosby was a frequent summer visitor to the ranch and was named the honorary mayor of the small city of Elko in 1948. CLEVELAND (AP) — A retired businessman and his wife have donated $3 million to endow the position overseeing American art at the Cleveland Museum of Art [www.clevelandart.org]. Retired former president and CEO of Westlake-based Nordson Corp. William Madar and his wife Amanda Madar made the donation that permanently endows the position currently held by Mark Cole at the museum. Norman Faust Schaut, of Linwood, New Jersey advertising man and legendary antique show promoter, passed away peacefully at his home with his devoted wife and son at his side on Feb. 11, 2019. WILLIAMSBURG, Va. —The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation has recently acquired its first portrait by the well-known, eighteenth-century British landscape and portrait painter Joseph Wright of Derby (1734-1797). Equally compelling is its subject matter as it is rare to be able to show the faces of those who were involved in events that led to the American Revolution and especially those who spent time in the Williamsburg area. NEW YORK (AP) — New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art says it’s returning a prized artifact to Egypt after learning it was stolen from the country in 2011. The Met said Feb. 15 that the Manhattan District Attorney’s office found evidence that the museum was given a false ownership history for the gilded Coffin of Nedjemankh. The Met bought the piece from a Paris art dealer in 2017 and displayed it until early February. Nedjemankh was a high-ranking first century BC priest. Investigators say the Met was given fraudulent documents, including a forged 1971 Egyptian export license. Met president Daniel Weiss apologized to Egypt. ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — Scientists at a premier U.S. laboratory have helped to unravel some of the mysteries about a rare gold specimen discovered at a Colorado mine more than 130 years ago. Officials at Harvard University’s mineral museum were anxious for Los Alamos National Laboratory’s assistance in understanding more about the structure of the specimen of wire gold, which looks as if it were formed by twisting together a bunch of thin strands of gold. The 263-gram specimen is named the Ram’s Horn, and Harvard officials have said it is the finest known example of its kind. No scientific studies previously had been published on the internal nature of the specimen. NEW YORK (AP) — The Morgan Library and Museum [https://www.themorgan.org] in New York City says its landmark McKim building will get exterior repairs to the tune of $12.5 million. Museum Director Colin Bailey announced the project Feb. 14, and says the project aims to improve the building’s roof, metalwork fence, weathered limestone and the building sculpture-work. The New York Times reports the renovation will be the building’s first exterior repairs since it was finished in 1906. The building is named for architect Charles McKim, who designed it to house the private library of financier J. P. Morgan. MILWAUKEE (AP) — Several Milwaukee senior care facilities are welcoming younger residents as part of a University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee program that allows students to teach art in exchange for housing. Andrew Gray, a 20-year-old theater student, moved into a one-bedroom apartment at independent living facility Luther Manor as part of the university's Student Artists in Residence program. The Milwaukee facility, which provides hospice care and assisted living services, is paying Gray's room and board as long as he spends time teaching residents art and gets them involved in activities, Wisconsin Public Radio reported. FULTON, Mo. (AP) — A mid-Missouri museum honoring Winston Churchill launched its 50th anniversary celebration March 5 with an art exhibit featuring the work of hundreds of students. Officials with America’s National Churchill Museum on the campus at Westminster College in Fulton say the art was inspired by the words of Churchill’s famous “Iron Curtain” speech. The longtime British prime minister delivered the speech at Westminster in 1946, the phrase “Iron Curtain” describing the separation of Eastern Europe that was under Soviet Union rule. The artwork was painted by students from the Fulton area, along with Westminster faculty, staff and students. HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) – Pennsylvania is planning to auction two bottles of rare Scotch whisky. The Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board is offering a Macallan 1949 Single Malt Scotch bottled in 2002 and a Macallan 1989 Single Malt Scotch bottled in 2010. The minimum bid for the 1949 Single Malt Scotch is set at $25,000, and the minimum bid for the 1989 Single Malt Scotch is set at $9,000. The board says the state acquired the bottles through a supplier. Board spokesman Shawn Kelley says they anticipate a lot of interest from Scotch lovers who will have a chance to acquire what could be the “crown jewel” of their collection. BRADDOCK, Pa. (AP) — Police in western Pennsylvania are investigating the theft of 13 stained glass windows from a shuttered church in suburban Pittsburgh. The Mon-Valley Initiative says a passerby noticed the theft Feb. 14 at the 126-year-old former First United Presbyterian Church in Braddock. The church, built in 1893, shut down in 2017 and was purchased by the nonprofit last year for housing. Spokesman Jason Togyer said officials planned to retain many of the original features.
