One of the most illustrious names in American art glass, Steuben Glass Works is best known for its beautiful, delicate, and vividly colored Art Nouveau and Asian-style pieces produced in the early 20th century. Steuben Glass was founded in 1903 when Frederick Carder, an alum of celebrated British glassmaker Stevens & Williams, and T.G. Hawkes and Company president Thomas Hawkes joined forces in Corning, N.Y. The new firm changed the entire glassmaking industry, and the work Carder did there as chief designer made him one of the most celebrated glass artists in history. In 1961, President John F. Kennedy challenged the nation to land astronauts on the moon by the end of the decade. On July 16, 1969, Apollo 11 rocketed off from Kennedy Space Center in Florida and four days later, on July 20, the crew of Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins and Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin, and a multitude of unsung heroes back on Earth, achieved that goal. Collector’s Gallery Q: Hi Dr. Cavo. I bought this swan side table with marble top more than 20 years ago from an antiques dealer who was packing up after a weekend show in central Wisconsin. I bought the table and a Queen Anne mahogany full length swivel floor mirror for $200. To be honest, I think the dealer was happy to not have to load up anymore items into his trailer. I really liked the mirror, but it was too big for my place, and I ended up giving it to an aunt who could use it. The swan table is in great shape and stands about 28 1/2 inches tall. R eleased almost fifty years ago, “Jaws” remains the perfect summer movie. Directed by Steven Spielberg and released on June 20, 1975, “Jaws” is considered the first summer movie blockbuster – and for good reason. The movie takes place over the Fourth of July weekend on Amity Island, a tourist town (the film was shot in Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts) that feeds offthe dollars of its visitors. In the opening sequence a young woman goes swimming in the ocean by moonlight. The blissful scene suddenly turns terrifying when the woman is pulled under, screaming, establishing the presence of a man-eating shark in the coastal waters. James Montgomery Flagg (1877-1960) was 39 when the U.S. entered World War I in 1917, much too old to enlist. Instead, Flagg drew on what he did best, and in the process influenced not only the war effort but also the face of a country. A leading illustrator of the time, Flagg’s dramatic creation of Uncle Sam exhorting “I Want You for U.S. Army” so resonated with the public that it became a recruitment marvel and one of the most enduring images of the 20th century. The poster struck a patriotic nerve, with a staggering four million copies printed between 1917 and 1918. Flagg created this oil on canvas illustration, “It’s Time to Build a Stronger America, Uncle Sam American Industry advertisement,” in 1932. It sold for $30,000 at Heritage Auctions.…

MILFORD, Conn.—American Impressionism led strong results at Shannon’s Spring Auction in May. The 205-lot sale grossed $2.5 million and was over 80 percent sold. The top lot was a “Portrait of Caroline Allport” from 1897 by William Merritt Chase (1849-1916) that sold for $118,750 to a private collection. The work depicts a young girl with a pink bow. Inscribed on the reverse is a poem about Jumbo the elephant described as “Our favorite song, Caroline and Mr. Chase.” The lot was accompanied by a letter from the artist describing the commission. Chase was an American painter, responsible for establishing the Chase School, which later became the Parsons School of Design. “Dressing,” a painting by Frederick Carl Frieske (1874-1939), sold for $112,500.
