Apple says people spent more than $10 billion in its app store last year, on apps such as "Minecraft," "'Angry Birds Star Wars" and "Sleep Cycle" alarm clock. December was the most successful month in the store's history, as customers spent $1 billion that month. Apple says the year's total was also a record. There are more than a million apps available in the app store for the !Phone, the !Pad and the !Pod Touch. In a room at a Cupertino office building in 1982, German designer Hartmut Esslinger decided that Apple computers had to be white. The last computer, the Apple III, had been a flop and Esslinger thought he knew partly why -- it was a color the designers called "greige." "Dud," Esslinger called it. A celebrity designer in Germany, Esslinger had modernized Sony TVs (bigger screens, cleaner lines) in the '70s and even made a showerhead (15 million of them were produced the year he sketched it). San Francisco will charge technology and other companies a fee for using public bus stops for their employee shuttle buses. Mayor Ed Lee and other city leaders joined Google, Facebook, Apple and other companies Monday to announce a pilot program to charge a fee based on the number of stops each shuttle provider makes. The shuttles have become a symbol of inequality for people concerned over the city's rising housing costs, which they blame on the region's tech boom. Protesters have blocked and vandalized the buses. While the shuttles create some traffic problems by blocking city bus stops during commute hours, Lee says they reduce gridlock and pollution by removing thousands of cars from roads each day.
