Microsoft Corp.’s board has chosen longtime company executive Satya Nadella to guide the company into the future after the once-dominant software giant faltered in recent years amid the rise of mobile computing and as competitors Google, Amazon.com and Apple increasingly threaten its relevance. Nadella will assume the role of chief executive officer and join Microsoft’s board immediately. The company also announced that Bill Gates, formerly board chairman, will assume the title of founder and technology adviser, which Microsoft said will allow him to devote more time to the company and to support Nadella in shaping technology and product direction. Sprint Corp. will provide free wireless broadband service to 50,000 students nationwide under a program President BarackObama mentioned in the State of the Union address last week. Starting Sept. 1, the Overland Park-based wireless company will provide the connections to lowincome students in elementary and secondary schools for four years, an announcement said. “This initiative will build on the efforts of today’s most innovative tech companies to help make our nation’s children better students, problem solvers, creative thinkers, and future leaders, while also training teachers to effectively use mobile technologies to improve student outcomes and prepare them for a competitive workforce,” Sprint chief executive Dan Hesse said in the company’s announcement. The European Union’s antitrust watchdog says Google is offering new and far-reaching concessions to address allegations it is abusing its dominant position in Internet searches. The EU’s executive said Wednesday that Google guarantees it will display results from three competitors in a similar way whenever it promotes its own specialized search services like Google shopping. Antitrust Commissioner Joaquin Almunia says this “provides users with a real choice between competing services presented in a comparable way.” He says Google’s offer of concessions, its third, will be sent to the plaintiffs for evaluation before the Commission makes a final decision on a settlement in the case opened in late 2010. U.S. companies are reporting strong profits for the fourth quarter of last year. SAN FRANCISCO - Google must move a mystery barge from a construction site on an island in the middle of San Francisco Bay because the permits are not in order, a state official said Monday. The notice came after the San Francisco Bay ‘ Conservation and Development Commission investigated numerous complaints about construction of the floating, four-story building, commission executive director Larry Goldzband said. The investigation found that neither the Treasure Island Development Authority nor the city of San Francisco had applied for required permits for the work to be done at the site and could face fines and enforcement proceedings. Accomplished as a film actor, producer and director, Hoffman began his acting career in the early ‘90s. He attracted acclaim as a supporting actor in such notable films as 1992’s Scent of a Woman, Twister in 1996 and Boogie Nights the following year.
