Google has bought Titan Aerospace, a maker of solar-powered drones, saying it could help bring Internet access to remote parts of the world as well as solve other problems. Financial terms were not disclosed. Google Inc. said Monday that atmospheric satellites could also be used in disaster relief and assessing environmental damage. Titan’s atmospheric satellites, which are still in development and not yet commercially available, can stay in the air for as long as five years, according to reports. It now appears that the “Heartbleed” security problem affects not just websites, but also the networking equipment that connects homes and businesses to the Internet. A defect in the security technology used by many websites and equipment makers have put millions of passwords, credit card numbers and other personal information at risk. The White House and U.S. intelligence agencies said on Friday neither the National Security Agency nor any other part of the government were aware before this month of the “Heartbleed” bug, denying a report that the spy agency exploited the glitch in widely used Web encryption technology to gather intelligence. The White House, the NSA and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence issued statements after Bloomberg reported that the NSA was aware of the bug for at least two years and exploited it in order to obtain passwords and other basic information used in hacking operations. Intelligence was received that some shops across a swathe of east London were happy to buy phones from thieves. Two traders were filmed buying Samsung S3 and iPhone 4 devices from a researcher posing as a thief - despite him making it clear they were stolen. The shops involved have declined to comment. On receiving tip-offs about numerous rogue businesses, eight used smartphones were acquired by lawful means. Each smartphone was personalized with images and backgrounds with contacts added, calls made and messages sent. They were then all blocked or reported stolen to the networks. The undercover researcher then offered the phones for sale - typically with messages on the screens reading: “This mobile has been stolen. This phone has now been locked. The investment decisions by four technology companies come in the midst of a heated debate over whether it is too easy for patent owners to extract large royalty payments, and whether patent buying firms spur or stifle innovation. Wireless telecommunication services provider Goodman Networks Inc filed with U.S. regulators to raise up to $100 million in an initial public offering of its common stock. BofA Merrill Lynch and Jefferies are the lead underwriters for the offering, the company told the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in a preliminary prospectus. AutoNavi said the company’s shareholders will receive $5.25 per ordinary share, or $21 per American Depositary Share. Sony is advising consumers to quit using some of its VAIO laptop computers and unplug them, saying that it’s possible that its non-removable battery pack could overheat. The company says it’s in the process of creating a program to repair or replace the computers, or will refund their purchase price. The packs included in some of Sony’s Vaio Fit 11A models, which were released in February, were provided by a third-party supplier. If the packs overheat, it could cause burns to the laptop’s housing, Sony said Friday. The recall affects computers with the product name “SVF11N1XXXX.” It’s unclear how many laptops are affected. Salesforce.com announced last Friday that it will be the main tenant in a 61-story building under construction in San Francisco. When completed in 2017, “Salesforce Tower” will be the tallest office building west of the Mississippi River. Early adopters of 4K may be unable to take advantage of the new feature as the decoder required to view Netflix 4K videos is not built into early 4K televisions.
