Facebook users in the U.S. will soon be able to see which of their friends are nearby using a new feature the company is launching on Thursday. The “Nearby Friends” feature must be turned on by the user, so people shouldn’t expect to broadcast their location unknowingly. It will use your smartphone’s GPS system to tell your Facebook friends you are nearby - provided they have the feature turned on as well. Rather than share your exact location, it will show only that you are nearby, say, within half a mile. CEO Jeff Bezos’ annual letter to shareholders offers a glimpse into Amazon’s internal workings and what it is aiming for in the future, including more grocery services and the much-discussed drone delivery. In the letter released Thursday, Bezos outlined Amazon’s offerings, including its fresh grocery business called Prime Fresh, which it has offered for five years in Seattle and expanded to Los Angeles and San Francisco. The number of Americans who say they’ve had important personal information stolen online is on the rise, according to a Pew Research Center report released Monday. According to the survey conducted in January, 18 percent of online adults have had personal information stolen such as their social security number, credit card or bank account information. That’s up from 11 percent in a July 2013 Pew survey. The number of adults who had an online account compromised or taken over without their permission - such as email or social media -remained flat at 21 percent. Venture capital funding for U.S. start-ups hit its highest mark since 2001 during the first three months of the year and 11 companies were valued at $1 billion or more, underscoring the increasingly pricey environment for entrepreneurs, according to a report on Thursday from consultancy CB Insights. Venture capitalists invested $9.99 billion across 880 deals in the first quarter of 2014. The dollar amount jumped by 44 percent compared with the same quarter in 2013, while the number of deals rose by 5 percent. The large number of companies that won funding last quarter with billion dollar valuations is the same as for all of 2013.
