SAN FRANCISCO-Roku is plugging headphones and several other new features into its latest set-top box for streaming Internet video to TVs, a move that amplifies its effort to upstage Apple's better-selling player. The Roku 3 box going on sale Wednesday also includes a more powerful search engine to find movies, TV shows and music more quickly and new menu for perusing the more than 750 online services available through the device. SAN FRANCISCO-A disgruntled shareholder pressing Apple to create a new class of preferred stock has dropped a lawsuit that became a moot point after the iPhone and iPad maker changed the agenda at its annual meeting earlier this week. Lawyers for hedge fund manager David Einhorn of Greenlight Capital notified U.S. District Judge Richard Sullivan in a letter sent Thursday that they no longer plan to pursue the lawsuit . Sullivan closed the case, which began three weeks ago in New York. Einhorn had already achieved his goal last week when Sullivan issued a preliminary ruling blocking an Apple Inc. proposal that would have required shareholder approval before preferred stock could be issued. Of different OS platforms, Google's Android will account for 58% of the total, with Apple’s iOS commanding an annual share of 33%. Microsoft's Windows Phone will finish the year with a slice of slightly smaller than 4%, with BlackBerry trailing it with 3%. Wall Street's anti-Apple bandwagon rolls on. Shares of the tech titan fell to a new 52-week low yesterday after one Wall Street analyst said sales of the iPhone 5 could slow in the current quarter ahead of a new smartphone release. The Credit Suisse analyst said Apple would ship a less-than- expected 158 million iPhones in 2013 as consumers held off buying while awaiting the next-generation device. Also, Samsung’s new Galaxy brand smartphone, which is expected to be unveiled in two weeks, poses a threat to iPhone sales, the analysts said. SAN JOSE, Calif. - A federal judge on Friday erased nearly half of the $1 billion in damages that a jury decided that Samsung Electronics should pay Apple in a high-profile trial over the smartphone and tablet computer patents. U.S. District Court Judge Lucy Koh lowered the damages awarded to Apple Inc. by $450.5 million, saying jurors had not properly followed her instruction in calculating some of the damages. The ruling reduced Samsung Electronics’ bill to just under $599 million. Koh also ordered a new trial on Apple’s allegations that Samsung stole its ideas for more than a dozen different smartphones and tablet computers.
