That's part of Apple's defense against an antitrust lawsuit brought by the Justice Department that depicts it as the "ringmaster" of a scheme to raise the price of e-books. WASHINGTON - A labor group Apple Inc. joined to assess working conditions at three manufacturing plants in China, where its products are made, says conditions are improving. But employees are still working more hours than the country's legal limit. The Fair Labor Association said Thursday that Apple's largest supplier, Foxconn, has made all recommended improvements to working conditions that were due by the end of December. The group says there have been "notable increases" in workers' participation in union committees. Foxconn has reduced working hours, though not enough to comply with the Chinese legal limit of 49 hours per week. Foxconn is scheduled to do that by July. Apple Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook says he will call for corporate tax reform to make it less costly for U.S. corporations to repatriate cash from overseas. Cook told The Washington Post in an interview Thursday he will propose a "dramatic simplification" of corporate tax law next week when he testifies at a Senate hearing on the subject of getting companies to bring cash back to the United States from overseas and use the money to generate employment and foster research and development.
