J.C. Penney's biggest investor, William Ackman, plans to sell his entire stake in the struggling department store operator for about $504.4 million - a loss of around $470 million from what he paid for it. The move comes two weeks after Ackman resigned from J.C. Penney Co/s board as part of a deal to resolve an unusually public battle between the activist investor and the retailer. Pershing Square Capital Management's Ackman disclosed in a regulatory filing late Monday that he was going to sell his nearly 18 percent interest - or 39.1 million shares. An elementary school in Carson on Tuesday became a pioneer in a $l-billion effort to provide !Pads to every student in the Los Angeles Unified School District. Broadacres Elementary School handed out the Apple tablet computers ahead of most campuse in the nation's second-largest system. The idea is to work out the kinks before other schools and hundreds of other students receive the devices. Broadacres is one of 47 schools set to distribute !Pads over the next few weeks. The devices for these schools will cost about $30 million. Supplying tablets for the entire district, about 650,000 students, will cost about $500 million. A New York judge says she doesn't want to intrude much on how Apple does business after ruling that the company fixed prices on electronic books. Judge Denise Cote (COHT) made the observation Tuesday as she revised remedies that government lawyers proposed after their victory over Apple Inc. last month. The judge found that the maker of iPods, iPads and iPhones had conspired with publishers in 2010 to destroy Amazon's $9.99 e-book price. Cote said she'll likely approve remedies next week. An Apple lawyer told the judge the company continues to disagree with her antitrust finding and will pursue its appeal. Facebook has issued a report revealing it fielded requests from 74 countries for data on at least 38,000 users in the first half of 2013. The report released Tuesday provided details on the scale and scope of data requests Facebook received from governments around the world, requests made both for security investigations and criminal cases, The Washington Post reported. The United States made the most requests, the report said, asking for access to more than 20,000 accounts; Facebook said it supplied the requested data in around 79 percent of cases.
