Nearly 40 people filed into Sunnyvale council chambers July 9 to join the city council in a study session regarding the Apple Campus 2 draft environmental impact report released last month. The city of Sunnyvale has no authority in the decision-making process of the project details; however, it is protocol for border cities to send an official letter with its comments as well as the public's to the lead agency involved. The deadline for Sunnyvale to send its letter to Cupertino is July 22. The letter itself goes directly to the city from Sunnyvale staff and does not pass through the city council. Hackers around the world said they are finding flaws in governments' computer codes and then selling them to the countries' adversaries. The business is booming, The New York Times reported. On the European island of Malta, Luigi Auriemma, 32, and Donato Ferrante, 28, operate their own hacking company, ReVuIn, but the pair won't reveal the names of their clients. A few years ago, hackers like Auriemma and Ferrante would have sold the details of the flaws to companies like Microsoft and Apple, and thi companies would have fixed them. Although the companies have recently increased how much they are willing to pay for the information, they are being outbid by countries who wish to exploit the flaws, the Times said. Lucasfilm and Pixar have settled a class-action lawsuit alleging they were part of a Silicon Valley conspiracy to not poach workers from rival companies, according to a federal judge's order filed on Sunday. In a brief order, U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh indicated she has received a letter from lawyers in the case disclosing the two companies have settled their part of the hotly contested case, leaving five companies in the litigation. The order did not disclose the terms of the settlement. There was no indication in the order that the other companies defending the anti-poaching claims have likewise settled. Microsoft is slashing the price of its Surface RT tablet by $150 as it fights to increase its tiny share of the booming tablet market. The cut brings the price of the Surface RT with 32 gigabytes of memory to $349 without a cover, which also acts as a keyboard. Including a cover with a touch-sensitive keyboard, the device comes to $449. The Surface has a 10.1-inch screen measured diagonally. According to market research firm IDC, Microsoft shipped about 900,000 tablets in the first quarter of 2013. That includes both the slimmed-down RT version and the Pro version of Surface, which is compatible with regular Windows programs. Microsoft may be close to offering a smartwatch, with sources in the company telling AmongTech prototypes are already being used by some Microsoft employees. The watch, running a modified version of Windows 8, will be available in a number of colors (red, yellow, black, grey, white and blue), and will have its own built-in antenna, relieving it of the need to be synced with a smartphone, the sources said.
