Apple’s rumored low-cost iPhone may be offered without the Siri voice assistant, a U.S analyst says, taking a position at the bottom of the iPhone lineup. Introduced in 2011, Apple’s voice assistant doesn’t support earlier iPhone models like the iPhone 4 and 3GS, suggesting Apple may retire the iPhone 4 model and replace it as its low-end offering with the upcoming budget phone some have dubbed iPhone 5C, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster told CNET. NEW YORK - Apple won a partial victory in its long-running patent dispute with Samsung on Friday when a U.S. administrative panel found Samsung in violation of two Apple patents and blocked imports of some Samsung devices. But the U.S. International Trade Commission cleared Samsung on four other patents in dispute. President Barack Obama’s administration has 60 days to veto ITC rulings. Over the weekend, the administration invalidated a June order that sided with the South Korean company and banned imports of Apple’s iPhone 4 and a variant of its iPad 2. WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama has met with executives from tech companies including Apple Inc. and AT&T Inc. about concerns stemming from the disclosure of sweeping government surveillance programs. The White House says the Thursday meeting was part of an ongoing effort to engage on privacy issues and the proper balance with national security in the digital age. The Norwegian government, citing security concerns, says it has denied a request from Apple to do a 3-D mapping of the capital city of Oslo. Norway’s National Security Authority rejected the application from Apple for permission to fly over the city and take images because the 3-D mapping would include military buildings, the local Aftenposten newspaper reported. Although 2-D maps of Oslo are available in Apple maps, officials said they had concerns about detailed 3-D views of government buildings. “We do not want [images] to be shot with such a high degree of precision that it could be used to identify areas that require special shielding,” Oyvind Mandt of the National Security Authority told the Aftenposten.
