After years of declines, total consumer spending on movies for home use grew 2% in the first half of the year to $8.63 billion. People increasingly spent money to access or own digital copies of movies, which helped make up for declining sales of DVDs and Bluray discs. After reports of an electrocution in China caused by a faulty iPhone charger, Apple says it will let customers trade third-party chargers for genuine units. Beginning Aug. 16, Apple will let iPhone customers trade in their non-Apple USB charger for one made by Apple, The Verge reported Tuesday. Apple said it will dispose of any third-party chargers a user suspects to be faulty and, for a discounted price of $10, will provide a new official adapter. Samsung Electronics Co. has applied for U.S. and South Korean trademarks for a watch that connects to the Internet in the latest sign that consumer technology companies see wearable devices as the future of their business. Samsung described “Samsung Galaxy Gear” as a wearable digital electronic device in the form of a wristwatch, wrist band or bangle in its July 29 application with U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Samsung has the highest-rated smartphone in the UK and the US, according to new research from the National Customer Satisfaction Index (NCSI-UK) and the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI). In the UK, Samsung’s 2012 flagship model Galaxy S III obtains a score of 84, beating Apple’s iPhone 5 and iPhone 4 at 82 (on a 0-100 scale).
