New research suggests oil drilling decades ago may have triggered earthquakes in the Los Angeles region, including the 1933 quake that killed more than 100 people. If confirmed, it would be the first time oil operations have been linked to a deadly quake in the United States. Scientists from the U.S. Geological Survey combed through historical records and identified several quakes in the 1920s and 1930s that were potentially caused by industry activities, including the 1933 magnitude 6.4 jolt that struck the port city of Long Beach. A group calling itself “Shadow Brokers” says it’s releasing another tranche of information from its trove of top secret hacking data stolen from the U.S.’s National Security Agency. Shadow Brokers has been closely followed by intelligence watchers and cybersecurity specialists since the group released a set of NSA hacking tools into the wild in August, purportedly the opening act in an implausible money-raising stunt. The Intercept, an investigative publication with access to NSA material leaked by former intelligence contractor Edward Snowden, confirmed Shadow Brokers’ tools were real by cross-referencing the leaked data with information held in a previously unpublished top secret manual. The authenticity of the latest batch of material could not immediately be established. The Shadow Brokers did not return messages seeking comment Monday. The NSA declined to comment.…

Microsoft says a newly discovered flaw in its Windows software was used by a hacking group that other researchers have linked to Russia’s government and computer intrusions at the Democratic National Committee. The flaw was detected by researchers at Google, who recently alerted software makers Microsoft and Adobe Systems about vulnerabilities in their programs. Adobe issued a fix for its software last week. Microsoft says it’s testing a patch and will release it next week. Rhode Island is suing Hewlett Packard Enterprise over a long-delayed project to build a new computer system for the state’s Division of Motor Vehicles. A lawsuit filed Tuesday in state Superior Court seeks a temporary restraining order requiring the Palo Alto, California-based company to keep working on the project. It says the state has already paid more than $13 million for a DMV system that hasn’t been fully delivered. Democratic Gov. Viacom has named Robert Bakish as acting president and chief executive to succeed interim CEO Tom Dooley, who is leaving the media conglomerate. Chinese authorities could freeze assets and take other actions against foreign hackers threatening the country’s infrastructure under a revised draft of a new cybersecurity law. The law has been submitted for its third and final reading by the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, China’s legislature, the official Xinhua News Agency reported. Xinhua says the draft would allow police and other agencies to freeze assets and apply “other necessary punishment” against foreign hackers, while also requiring expanded security measures for industries including public communications, energy and finance. Facebook and Twitter have months to improve their response to online hate speech in Germany or face legal measures, the country’s justice minister said Tuesday. Heiko Maas said checks show that social networking sites have a patchy record of deleting posts that are considered illegal in Germany. A two-month test conducted over the summer found that Facebook removed 46 percent of posts flagged by users, while Twitter removed just 1 percent. The figures increased to 91 percent for Facebook and 82 percent for Twitter when the companies were contacted directly or flagged by so-called privileged users. Maas said the checks will continue until March. “If it turns out that the removal rate remains so low, then we’ll take legislative measures,” he said. The White House said Monday that Obama’s official @POTUS account will be taken over by the next president.
