By the time Poorna Jagannathan was 24, she had lived in 15 places. Born in Tunisia to an Indian diplomat, she spent her early years moving between homes in India, Ireland, Pakistan, Argentina, Brazil, and the United States, all pre-furnished. “We slipped into other people’s aesthetics,” reflects the actor, best known for her roles in Netflix’s Never Have I Ever and HBO’s The Night Of. “I never had the chance to figure out my own design sensibility.” Nor did she have a chance to lay roots. Over the past three decades, the AD100 Hall of Fame talent—whose client list includes titans of taste on the order of Tom Ford and Helen and Brice Marden—has happily embarked on his own perilous adventures, renovating a series of white elephants that mere mortals would not dare to touch. First there was the rehabilitation of Balcastle, an eccentric early-20th-century brick-and-limestone house with a crenellated tower improbably rising above a street of humble shingled cottages in the town of Southampton, New York. “It was a benign eyesore—Medieval Times meets South Fork swank,” Sofield says of the challenging property. Line Vautrin, the sculptor who dazzled 1930s Paris with her gilt-bronze buttons, jewelry, and other whimsies, is often called the poetess of metal. But her mirrors—one of Vautrin’s best-known bodies of work—were hewn from something far less traditional: an unusual amalgamation of resin and glass. It was a simple umbrella handle, embedded with mirrors, that may have served as the starting point for the novel technique called Talosel, which involved heating malleable cellulose acetate resin (similar to that used for sunglasses) in order to embed it with cut fragments of mirror and sculpt its shape.
