The Institute is proudly a longstanding organisation. Since 1929, we have endured while the world around us has transformed. (COUNTRY) Gadigal (LOCATION) Warrane/Sydney, NSW Pyrmont Community Centre by Welsh and Major restores a pale-brick-and-sandstone Italianate school building to its most dignified self, while complementing it with a new, equally bold addition to create a diverse collection of engaging neighbourhood spaces. The stridently solid off-form and concrete block addition, which replaces a compromised and lacklustre 1990s intervention (with some small, discrete elements retained where they could remain), balances the original building with a confidence that respects and celebrates the site and its many layers of history without being recessive or overwhelming. It has a calm yet characterful presence. The announcement in July 2021 that, unexpectedly, Brisbane had been awarded the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games was marked by an initial wave of excitement and seemingly well-deserved euphoria. Having often broadcast itself as a “world city,” Brisbane would at last rightly have the chance to claim the moniker with confidence in its role and standing as the generous, welcoming host for the finest athletes from nations around the globe. It seemed, at that time, that many factors were aligned to ensure that there was sufficient time to allow for the planning and delivery of an exciting and enriching event of significant status. (COUNTRY) Wurundjeri (LOCATION) Naarm/Melbourne, Vic Designed to support the Greater Metropolitan Cemetery Trust’s burial and horticulture team in the operation of Melbourne’s northern cemeteries, the Northern Memorial Park Depot might have been as inconspicuous as its neighbours in the industrial area of Glenroy. For both the client and architect, however, the idea of cemetery staff returning to a rudimentary concrete or steel-framed depot after preparing burial plots, liaising with memorial service providers and filling graves following funerals felt decidedly inhospitable. Moreover, whatever was built here would soon become the public backdrop to a planned extension of the adjacent memorial park. CATHERIN BULL Our first question is about what maximising the value or legacy of individual projects actually means. Other than Leah, the professional design institutes you represent have combined to prepare a submission to government called Green Pathways, Gold Places. Why has that come about and what does it advocate for in terms of value and legacy? SEAN CULLEN We’re public interest professions who have come together to create this piece of advocacy, focused around what we consider core principles. Quite deliberately, we haven’t looked at particular venues, but have focused on fundamental principles. They are not revolutionary, but can be transformative if done well.
