Advocating for meaningful action on climate change, 30 visual arts exhibitions across Melbourne and regional Victoria will present work that explores the burning issue and the relationship between art and the environment. An excellent example of this is the survey exhibition by Peter Dombrovskis (1945-1996), at Monash Gallery of Art until 12 May, whose photography of Tasmania’s wilderness played an important role in the prevention of the damming of the Franklin River. ‘Ghost History’ introduces the reader to a lone ballerina whose figure, and the architecture that surrounds her is accentuated with projecting light and the shadows it casts. Her face hidden, she holds balance on a nearby column before dancing, en pointe, from room to room, from photograph to photograph. Jenny Bolis captures the ephemerality of past and present, exploring the psychological space and narrative of a 19th-century manor and its contents: aged garments, hand-written journals, embossed wallpaper and lace curtains among others; while an illuminated lamp post and lit candles burn through the cover of darkness evoking spiritual undertones. The accompanying essay by Kirsty Francis provides a rhythmic transition from visceral to written composition, offering a poetic description of the mysterious photography.…

‘A Blank Canvas’ follows the humorous and ego-driven lives of the Pauman family, three generations of Australian artists working in very different fields. The novel’s satire of art-world types, its hierarchy, commerce and institutions is amusing without casualties. The grandfather is a respected senior abstract artist, who has an air that not much has happened in art since Rothko – except his own, of course. His son was a hotshot of conceptual art, but now his daughter’s popular portraits outstrip both patriarchs. The personas are explored in dedicated chapters, in a distinct authorial voice with a playful vocabulary, as quietly each family member applies for the same art prize, and keep other secrets – for art’s sake.…

What defines beauty? When ascribed to a particular object, the term may refer to balance, proportion and overall presence; combined with the contemplation, communication and transference of abstract concepts and aesthetic pleasure: all things become beautiful. However, this measure is purely subjective and depends on context. To paraphrase Plato; ‘Beauty lies in the eye of the beholder’ and therefore resists a universal definition. For Robbie Harmsworth, beauty is inherent in nature; a sentiment the now Melbourne-based artist discovered at an early age while growing up near Toolangi in regional Victoria. Author Wes Hill lectures in Art History and Visual Culture at Southern Cross University, Australia. This title is a considered analysis of the trajectory of the hipster; from its innovative origins to being mocked, and now normalised. Hill investigates how the concept of individualism, in a post WWII era through to today, has been tied to neoliberalism and does so with the lens of art history and cultural theory. Take a walk in the shoes of artist Nutter Buzacott (1905-1976) in this richly illustrated publication authored by his daughter Lee Dunn. Buzzacott was interested in everyday goings on and of the working class in particular. He captured life and landscape from the 1920s through to the 1970s, with an output of printmaking, cartoons, illustrations, paintings and graphic art, displayed throughout the book. Dunn documents the journey of realising his artistic vision as well as the time he spent as commercial artist, his service in the Australian Army’s Design Division Art Group and his involvement with the Half Dozen Group of Artists, his travels and exhibitions, while also sharing Buzacott’s connections with those who inspired him.…

Art has always been a deeply personal affair. Any and every piece of art – irrespective of form, medium, or intent – might be described as a self-portrait in which every line and mark says as much about its creator as its purported subject. While glimmers of this reality tend to flicker in most works, they shine through in Robert Hague’s exhibition, ‘Anatomies’ at Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre. ‘We lived art, talked art, drank art and the visitors were artists so that was my diet when I was young.’ – Nora Heysen Nora Heysen (1911-2003) was a still life and portrait painter who at the age of 15 turned the stables at her family home, ‘The Cedars’, into a studio, funded by the first sale of her work. Navigating the conservative social structures of the era, when women artists were not taken seriously, and shadowed by her artist-father, Hans Heysen, Nora paved her own way. In 1938 she became the first woman to win the Archibald Prize, and in 1943 was Australia’s first female official war artist.
