Driving through the countryside to see a landscape exhibition is the perfect preparation for the mind. The vista approaching the riverside town of Sale is Dutch in scale, but not sensibility. Soaring skies dominate the column of ant-like cars seeping across the plain. Corridors of tea tree, wattle, and squat eucalypts divide its flatness into neat sections of yellow-green acreage. Agricultural order is dwarfed by the immense sky. Gippsland Art Gallery is buzzing when I enter. The John Leslie Art Prize is back in full swing following the disruptions of COVID. SubTerrains Bankstown Biennale 2022: Sanctuary and Sovereignty is a First Nations-led project exploring the rich stories of culture and Country embedded within the landscape of Sydney's south-western region, Bankstown. Until 26 November, Bankstown Arts Centre is host to a range of artistic outcomes and activations, including painting, sculpture, light installations, canoe building, live performance, video installation, stencil work, embroidery, and weaving by twelve contemporary, mostly local western Sydney First Nations artists, which draw on critical historical narratives of colonisation, post-colonisation, war, and migration as well as works by artists from art collectives Juxta and Kantanka Creative. Siteworks 2022: From a deep valley will see the work of over twenty-five artists and ten scientific researchers drawing on climate research, critical thinking, First Nations knowledge, technologies and creative digital spaces throughout a major exhibition and program of outdoor installations, performances, workshops, and digital artworks from 26 November to 12 March 2023 across Bundanon, New South Wales. Siteworks 2022 presents the exhibition Inside, underground at Bundanon Art Museum, exploring the concept of interior weather. Responding to the architecture of the space, five artists: Carolyn Eskdale, Susan Jacobs, Kate Scardifield, Lucy Simpson, and Isadora Vaughan investigate the complex relationship between body and site using repurposed natural materials such as plant and animal matter, beeswax, oyster shells, and algae.
