Glenn Barkley: the electrical experience Sullivan+Strumpf Until 15 July 2023 Melbourne Frank Moorhouse’s The Electrical Experience, 1974, subtitled “a discontinuous narrative,” chronicles life in a series of fragments reflecting the protagonist’s (and author’s) fear of losing his selfhood; the structural irony bridging these splintered narratives into a mutually uncomprehending connexion. Identifying with this disconnect and re-connect is Glenn Barkley, whose recent ceramic pieces were made in the wake and shadow of two personal events that changed and reshaped the artist’s personal world. This exhibition, therefore, takes its name from the title of this book. In the duality of personal reckoning and heartbreak, paired with a need to keep on resolving the practicalities of life despite its uncontrollable intervals, Barkley once again references Moorhouse’s work, noting that the writer’s “Honesty, experimentation,…

Diana Baker Smith awarded PICA's 2024 Judy Wheeler Commission Each year, the Judy Wheeler Commission supports an Australia-based artist to create a bold new work that responds to Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts’ (PICA) architecture and history as one of Perth’s first schools and now a contemporary art space. Art Almanac congratulates Gadigal/Sydney-based artist Diana Baker Smith who was recently awarded PICA’s 2024 Judy Wheeler Commission. Working across performance, moving image, and installation, Baker Smith explores the relationship between art history and its institutions through a feminist lens.
