Solitude often enriches creativity. In this issue we explore the “after hours” in nightshifts at Buxton Contemporary, a contemplative exhibition considering the importance of solitude through contemporary arts practice, introduced by participating artist Benjamin Armstrong’s work on our cover. We “retreat into the darkness to find the meditative and quiet patina in art and artmaking” – into the artists’ personal, private spaces: their studios. Additional themes are transition, transformation, and adaptation – shifts that allow simplicity and complexity to collide; for example, the unseen substance of air, having no fixed shape or volume, is inflated by Rafael Lozano-Hemmer with echoes and sounds to highlight the atmosphere as a physical and interactive medium. The South Australian Living Artists (SALA) Festival is an open-access visual arts festival celebrating the creativity and vision of South Australian artists through their artistic practice. This year, the event showcases the work of 10,915 artists, presents 697 exhibitions, and is hosted at 620 registered venues across Tarntanya/Adelaide and regional areas from 1 to 31 August. Highlights include exhibitions, artist-led walking tours, talks, slide nights, open studios, and workshops, including an intensive five-day drawing marathon. SALA’s featured artist for 2023 is Helen Fuller. Her multidisciplinary practice encompasses painting, sculpture, installation, and ceramics, concerned with the characteristics of form rather than the function of the vessel. Warnarral Ngoorrngoorrool is the Gija word for “old car” and now the name of a new contemporary instrument and powerful cultural object created in the east Kimberley from an old car wreck, decorated with painted stories about cars, Country, and community. From 24 August to 16 September, Warnarral Ngoorrngoorrool travels from Kununurra to Perth, visiting twelve communities and regional centres along the way in an epic 3,456-kilometre trek titled The Journey Down. West Space 2024 Commissions Last month West Space, in Naarm/Melbourne’s inner-north, announced the recipients of their 2024 Commission series: Gabi Briggs and Akil Ahamat.
