Exhibitions are intended as communication devices – transmissions and interchanges of information, experiences, and meaning – constitutive of the artist and their work. In this issue, we explore not only this act of interaction and exchange but also the making of community and a sense of connection and belonging through various mediums and narratives; multilingual and multimodal conversations – open glossaries, documentary images, and cultural commentary. Each artist expresses their unique relationship to language, place, and collectivity: in every stitch of fibre, every shaping of clay, every clump of paint, and on the airwaves of vintage portable radios.…

Craft Contemporary 2023

Craft Contemporary, an annual festival comprising events, projects, open studios, exhibitions and more, celebrating craft practice today, is on from 1 to 31 October across multiple venues throughout Victoria. Exhibition highlights include Of Earth and Ether (Flowers never bend) by Louise Meuwissen at Bundoora Homestead Art Centre, which manifests elements of the ineffable. This exhibition centres around themes of transience and permanence, ideas of keepsake and arresting time. Adopting motifs of the arch, florals, and vessels of containment, Meuwissen draws upon historical and mythological representations of these symbolic objects as manifestations of emotional holding, ritual, power, and as anchors for memory and belief. Sculptures in the Garden 2023

Set amidst the captivating landscapes of the Rosby Vineyard's gardens in Mudgee, New South Wales, the annual Sculptures in the Garden draws in art enthusiasts, collectors, and nature lovers, with over 250 sculptures of different sizes and mediums, from steel to paper, on show from 7 to 22 October. This year, Brisbane-based artist Mela Cooke – known for her large-scale bronze sculptures of the human form – will display her work, revealing her continued passion for swimming figures. Cooke will be joined by a diverse group of artists, from emerging local talents to established names, including Mark Niglia, John Fitzmaurice, Dion Parker, Paul Bacon, and Marguerite Derricourt. Emanations Project 8 Until 14 October 2023 Melbourne Curated by Cūrā8, Emanations invites us to consider the nature and aesthetics of human and non-human communicative processes through multimodal materialisations. Here, the vehicular mediums of object, text, utterance, sound, signal, or delineation strip language of its practical function to make processes of transmission from a to b possible, to offer a space both connected to and liberated from rational sense, in flight from interpretation. Tarnanthi 2023

The Art Gallery of South Australia (AGSA) present this year's iteration of Tarnanthi, the most eagerly awaited survey of contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art, from 20 October to 21 January 2024. The festival encourages new beginnings by providing artists with opportunities to create significant new work and to extend their practice through talks, tours, performances, workshops, creative activities, and education programs. On 19 October, Tarnanthi launches with a Kaurna Welcome to Country and smoking ceremony by Adelaide's Kuma Kaaru, a keynote address by Western Arrernte/Yankunytjatjara artist and cultural leader Robert Fielding, and a free performance by Arrernte/Gurindji singer-songwriter Dan Sultan. OzAsia Festival

OzAsia Festival, Australia's leading contemporary arts festival engaging with Asia, returns to Adelaide Festival Centre from 19 October to 5 November showcasing the work of more than 300 national and international artists within a dynamic program of comedy, theatre, performance, dance, and music, as well as talks, workshops, and exhibitions. Sculpture by the Sea, Bondi

Sculpture by the Sea, Bondi, the world's largest annual free-to-the-public outdoor sculpture exhibition, celebrates its twenty-fifth anniversary this year, returning to Sydney's spectacular Bondi to Tamarama coastal walk from 20 October to 6 November. The iconic exhibition will see the coastline transformed into a 2km long sculpture park over three weeks, featuring over 100 sculptures by artists from Australia and across the world.
