Throughout this issue, there are two dominant themes: the idea of the Portrait and the documentation of Time. Neither is fully fixed. The former is the capturing of a person, in which the face is always predominant, or a representation of place in a particular moment – but its meaning shifts with time; influenced by cultural context, social standards, and/or personal experiences and understandings. The latter parallels this underlying concept of change, defined as an indefinite progress of existence or events, a measurement of process from past to present to future. Some artists look at the advancement or decline of society, the environment, and our place within, by defrosting, stripping or adding to narratives, histories and mediums. As we explore these exhibitions, artworks, and artist practices, we see that these…
