Cultural resilience, identity, and memory feature heavily throughout this issue, introduced by our cover image, Jennifer Herd’s Dislocation Reclamation, 2025, part of the artist’s solo exhibition, Off Country, at FireWorks Gallery, Brisbane. Herd, a Mbararrum woman whose family roots lie in far-north Queensland, creates new work reflecting her own experiences of displacement, resilience, and identity erasure, while celebrating community and cultural reconnection. In several works, a new motif, the map of Australia, is described as “a defiant truth: despite colonisation, Aboriginal peoples remain – resisting, reclaiming, and enduring on their land.” Works by other artists exhibiting this month are woven together by threads of cultural traditions, family and community, shared lived experiences, and the beauty and fragility of the human condition, as well as experimentation and play of medium.…

University of the Sunshine Coast Art Gallery Until 3 August 2025 Queensland Transfer focuses on eight contemporary artists with connections to Southeast Asia who explore textiles as a medium. Contemporary Art Tasmania Until 12 July 2025 Hobart MAKING DO RHYMES WITH POO presents an installation with a set design constructed from recycled materials (including radios, foil, cardboard, water, timber, foam, industrial bags, video projections, screens, costumes, mirrors and pulped paper shaped into poo-like sculptures), performances and an exhibition. Through her work, Justene Williams deals with conscious and unconscious forms of labour undertaken by the body. The exhibition title reads as both a way of “making do” with what’s at one’s disposal and to describe the “making” of automatic body labour, such as defecation or growing hair and nails.…

National Portrait Gallery Until 19 April 2026 Australian Capital Territory In Bloom explores the beauty and symbolism of flowers. Featuring more than fifty portraits drawn from the National Portrait Gallery collection, new acquisitions and selected loans, discover how flowers have long been used in art to express emotion and convey messages of personal, cultural and religious significance. The exhibition is a flowery arrangement of socialites, chefs, musicians, actors, and politicians, unified by their accompanying floral markers – from a tapestry of Dame Elisabeth Murdoch in her much-loved garden to a photograph of Margaret Olley among her flower still-life paintings.…

Griffith University Art Museum Until 16 August 2025 Queensland Collecting the Future traces the changing cultural and social contexts within which Griffith University and its Art Collection have operated since their foundation in the 1970s – while also highlighting the role of donors in building the collection and enhancing its cultural impact. Baba Yaga is a monstrous old woman – a witch, who commands her transfigured herd of forty-one daughter-horses to foil the hero-prince.
