Spring is here, and with it, a freshness much needed after a cold winter. New art has been made and awaits its debut; new audiences, new perspectives, new discussions. It’s time to go outside: hear the dawn chorus of birds, smell the flowers in bloom, “play in the dirt” and enjoy the wonderful art on view across the country this September. With this issue in hand, we’ll guide you on where to go and what to see – from art prizes to collections on view, to art fairs like Sydney Contemporary which showcases the work of our cover artist, Gemma Smith, and public commissions, to curated group shows such as Primavera 2025 which explores “the intertwinement between humanness and machines” and solo presentations including Kerrie Oliver’s collection of new works…

Devonport Regional Gallery Until 1 November 2025 Tasmania Amanda Davies Solo Commission 2025; Reunion: Reflections on the Portraits of Owen Lade reimagines Lade’s poignant portrait paintings, transforming his solitary child figures – for which he is best known – into dynamic group compositions. By exploring relationships between sitters and artist, Davies introduces new narratives and deepens connections. Her reinterpretation of Lade’s self-portrait, Yours Sincerely, 1988, painted with oils on hardboard, provides a contemporary perspective on the nude. Ngununggula 6 September to 9 November 2025 New South Wales Voyager is the gallery’s inaugural international exhibition, featuring a survey of works by Auckland-based Māori new media artist Lisa Reihana. Showcasing digital works and photography, included is a new iteration of video installation Māramatanga, 2024 – drawing inspiration from Auckland University’s whare whakairo Tānenui-a-rangi – and the newly commissioned Belong. An extension of Reihana’s outdoor sculpture Glisten, 2024, for National Gallery Singapore, Belong draws inspiration from local First Nations stories and the gallery’s environment, the artist adorning its entrance with hundreds of reflective discs that glisten and move with the wind.…

HOTA Gallery 13 September 2025 to 15 February 2026 Queensland Known for his vibrant imagery and bold use of colour, Sydney-based artist Ken Done’s paintings are exuberant celebrations of the world around him. Done’s philosophy is that an artist can and should create their own rules – this exhibition is largely drawn from the artist’s personal collection, which features works from the 1980s to today. The Lock-Up Until 16 November 2025 New South Wales Lismore-based Wiradjuri, Irish and German multidisciplinary artist Karla Dickens is known for her found-object practice, often placing overlooked or discarded objects into new contexts to challenge Australian culture, contest histories and agitate for change. A ‘lock-on’ is a non-violent – and powerful – civil disobedience tactic used by protesters, where bicycle locks, handcuffs and other DIY materials secure them in their place of protest. Here, Dickens’ assemblages link Indigenous histories of dispossession and invasion through her personal experience, ecofeminism, and provocative visual language, as legacies of capitalism, colonialism and patriarchy are interrogated.…

“… procedure, process, and play” Kerrie Oliver’s collection of new works – titled Tippy Toes – springs from an obsession with the act of painting: its physicality, its conceptual parameters, and its flexibility. From her home studio in inner-south Brisbane/Magan-djin, Oliver negotiates the boundless possibilities of non-objective, material exploration alongside the demands of everyday life with two busy teenage sons. Pulsating with sumptuous colours, material experimentation, and traces of impulse (smear it on, wipe it off), the paintings feel effortless, unhurried, almost frozen in time. “When they’re on the wall they seem completely deliberate,” explains Oliver, “but during the process it’s as though they’ve painted themselves.” This statement offers a partial glimpse of Oliver’s drive toward procedure, process, and play, a sentiment that echoes Harold Rosenberg’s mid-twentieth century treatise on…
