Often taking inspiration from historical objects, ceramicist Molly Hatch’s latest 37-plate installation at Philadelphia’s The Clay Studio is no different. A bold take on the famed 1796 “States” plate from the presidential dinner service created for Martha Washington, Hatch’s work Ouroboros takes elements of the plate’s classic iconography to create a modern, abstract work relevant to today’s audience. Hatch’s proclivity for reaching back in time and reconfiguring traditional themes made her a perfect fit for The Clay Studio’s “Making Place Matter” inaugural exhibition celebrating its new space in Philadelphia’s Kensington neighborhood. CHARLOTTE JACKSON Fine Art in Santa Few, New Mexico, will host two exhibitions this summer that spotlight shape, form and color. Through July 17 the gallery will exhibit the playful aluminum sculptures of Pard Morrison in the show The Forest. Each work has brilliant colors and geometrics, but are also based on Morrison’s personal contemplations in the forest. With their box-like shapes, each piece features individually hand brushed pigment that is fired separately so to not change the color and shape next to it. The process creates clean lines and shifts that also have a feeling of flow and movement. Featured in the show are a collection of columns and sculptures, assorted wall installations and seven free-standing columns of varying sizes. IN AN invitation-only auction, an incredibly rare Mercedes-Benz sold for the unprecedented sum of €135 million to a private collector, making it the most expensive vehicle in the world. The 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR ‘Uhlenhaut Coupé’ is one of only two ever manufactured and the coveted car hit the auction block for the first time in May, far surpassing the previous record car price of $70 million set in 2018 for a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO. Well-preserved Art Nouveau furniture is rare, making this pristine étagère by Émile Gallé that more desirable. Gallé (1846-1904), a French artist, designer and leader in the Art Nouveau movement (approximately 1890 to 1910), gained international acclaim as an innovator in glass, creating vases and objects d’art that routinely command six-figure sums at auction. He also made furniture and eventually opened a wood-working shop in his hometown of Nancy, France, where he established the “École de Nancy.” The school was committed to creating a community of artisans and craftspeople steeped in the philosophy of the new movement, with the desire to create original and intrinsically beautiful work. THE LEGACY of painter Hung Liu is being celebrated by Turner Carroll Gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico, which hosted many shows for the artist in her lifetime. The exhibition, happening July 22 through August 21, marks the one-year anniversary of Liu’s passing and is a look back on her now complete oeuvre. Titled “Gilded Humanism”, the show taps into Liu’s impact as an artist and the world at large. SITE SANTA FE was founded in 1995 and has been a place of innovation and discovery in artwork. This summer the gallery will have two solo exhibition that will captivate audiences with the individual techniques of the artists. Through August 21 is SPECTRUM, the first museum solo exhibition for Diné and Chicana artist Nani Chacon. This body of work has strong visual storytelling drawn from Diné creation mythology but reflects Chacon’s contemporary experiences. OUR TENDENCY is to view the visions of Hieronymus Bosch through the lens of surrealism, drawing straight lines from Bosch to Salvador Dali, from Bosch to Max Ernst, from Bosch to Monty Python’s Terry Gilliam, for that matter. ON JULY 23 paintings and sculptures by some of the best artists of the West will take center stage during the 37th annual Coeur d’Alene Art Auction in Reno, Nevada. This year’s sale includes several rare and first-time auction arrivals by historic and contemporary masters. There will be multiple chances to take home artwork by two of the most recognized cowboy artists: Charles M. Russell and Frederic Remington. SELECT WORKS of art from The Huntington’s premier collection of more than 12,000 British watercolors and drawings will be on view in the major exhibition “100 Great British Drawings” through September 5. Artwork in the show, dating from the 17th through mid-20th century, includes rarely seen pieces from William Blake, John Brett, John Constable, Thomas Gainsborough, Gwen John, Paul Nash and J. M. W. Turner. The majority of the British drawings collection was established after the time of The Huntington’s founders, Henry and Arabella Huntington, when Robert R. THIS SUMMER Santa Fe Art Auction will host two finely curated sales: New Mexico Now: Spanish Colonial to Spanish Market on July 22 and 23 and American Indian and Tribal: Classic to Contemporary on August 12 and 13. Both auctions will feature material by important artists of each category. New Mexico Now was planned to coincide with Santa Fe, New Mexico’s Spanish Market held yearly at the end of July. This auction will include nearly 400 lots and is the only one in the country with both historic and contemporary Spanish Colonial and Pueblo material. THE SUMMER OF 2022 is a very special time for Mokha Laget. Her first exhibition in a commercial gallery was held in 1981 at the Jack Rasmussen Gallery in Washington, D.C. Today, Jack Rasmussen is the director and curator of D.C.’s American University Museum at the Katzen Arts Center, which is the location of the survey exhibition Mokha Laget: Perceptualism featuring Laget’s late paintings and sculptures.
