CHARLTON HALL offers an auction of the Dr & Mrs. C.G. Hopper Collection on Friday, February 10. This significant collection was largely acquired four-to-five decades ago and focuses on the American South during the Colonial Period, Revolutionary War, and other early historical periods. Dr. Hopper began to collect in the early 1970s, acquiring rare books, documents, and maps from internationally recognized dealers, including some of the most notable in the trade such as Arader, Cohasco, Flayderman, Glaser, Goodspeed, Heflin, Nebenzahl, Radford, Reese, Raimo, Rendell, Rubinfine, and others. One of the books offered is the “Rare Early Book: American Revolutionary War Campaigns”. The book was published in London 1787 by Sir Banastre Tarleton, and titled, “A History of the Campaigns of 1780 and 1781: In the Southern Provinces of North America”.…

THE JERALD MELBERG Gallery will present “Banners of the Coast”, an exhibition of paintings by Brian Rutenberg, on view through February 18. “Banners of the Coast”, the gallery’s ninth solo exhibition of the artist’s works, features new oil paintings on linen and paper. Rutenberg’s abstracted landscapes meditate on the contrasting elements of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, where the artist was born and raised. The paintings focus on the tension between the natural beauty of the East Coast landscape, and the neonsoaked city, full of amusement parks and arcades. THROUGH FEBRUARY 25th, Throckmorton Fine Art offers an exhibition of portraits by the celebrated Guatemalan photographer, Luis González Palma. The exhibition, entitled “Mirada” (The Gaze), showcases iconic images from early in the artist’s career, paired alongside recent works. Throckmorton Fine Art is in New York City. Luis González Palma was born in Guatemala in 1957, he lives and works in Cordoba, Argentina. CALLAN Contemporary presents James Kennedy’s fifth solo exhibition with the gallery entitled “Reverence and Riffs”. The exhibition is open to the public through February 25. James Kennedy builds the surfaces of his paintings with multi-later washes. He then uses mark making techniques to create topographical and textural complexity within his abstract compositions. These techniques, including glazing, give a translucent quality to the works. There is a tension between a fractured nature of the work, and contrasting that through color palette and texture, creates a state of organic harmony. Economy of Language (2 02 2) is a vertical painting with a dusty palette of greens, pinks, browns, and blues. These concepts are underscored in the exhibition “Action/Abstraction Redefined: Modern Native Art, 1945-1975,” organized by the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) Museum of Contemporary Native Arts (MoCNA) in Santa Fe. THE 20TH annual Palm Beach Show returns between February 16-21 to the Palm Beach County Convention Center. The show will feature exhibitors presenting collections of fine art, jewelry, silver, textiles, porcelain, and artworks of other mediums ranging in date from the antiquities to the 20th century shown by dealers from around the world. Butchoff Antiques will present the Carved Bog Yew Armchair from Irish designer and manufacturer Arthur Jones. SEATTLE-BASED a r t ist Ginny Ruffner is the subject of a retrospective at the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art (BIMA), on view now through February 15th. The exhibition entitled Ginny Ruffner: What If?, takes the viewer through the artist’s forty-year-long career with an array of diverse media and several series of works. Although Ruffner is best-known for her glass sculptural work, the retrospective features paintings, installations, public art projects, metal sculpture, cast glass, and works activated through augmented reality (AR). THE LA ART Show, one of the largest international art fairs in the United States, will return to the Los Angeles Convention Center on February 15–19. GALLERY SONJA Roesch is pleased to announce renowned sculptor John Clement’s 4th solo exhibition with the gallery, “Eye of the Storm”. The exhibition opened on January 13 and will be on view through March 4 in Houston, Texas. John Clement lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. His works exist in the rich lineage of large-scale sculpture, abstract expressionism, and the Constructivist movement. HELEN FRANKENTHALER’S paintings are blends of nuanced color that pool and slide, submerging the viewer into liquid shapes. Hers are not representational paintings; they are moods and ideas. She said, “What concerns me when I work is not whether the picture is a landscape or whether somebody will see a sunset in it. ON JANUARY 14 Arizona’s longest-running art show, the “Celebration of Fine Art”, will return to Scottsdale for its 33rd iteration. THE UNIVERSE of illumination and color, along with reflections on how we perceive it, is the subject of “Light + Change,” a show at the Palm Springs Art Museum (until May 7, 2023) featuring Phillip K. Smith III’s light-based work of the last two decades. Vivian Springford (1913–2003) has earned an almost mythic reputation in the art world today. Often recalled as a 1932 New York City debutante, she has long evaded consideration as a serious artist. Born in Milwaukee, Springford was transplanted as a teenager in 1930 to New York City, where she attended the prestigious Spence School. After graduating, she turned away from high-society tradition to pursue an education in the arts at the Art Students League of New York. She continued her studies at the League for 14 years, developing a strong academic background in drawing and painting. During this time, she pursued a traditional artist’s career, producing oil portraits for private clients and illustrations for publications.
