PARIS’ CHARM MIGHT BE IRRESISTIBLE, but artist Nicolas Martin’s journey took him across the Atlantic to Montreal, where the cold, crisp light of Canadian winters now drives his art. His childhood was steeped in culture and creativity; amidst the art-filled streets of Paris and his mother always playing classical music. “Paris is like an outdoor museum – art is everywhere – and I’ve always felt incredibly fortunate,” he reflects. “My mother played an important role in my introduction to art and music.” Early exposure to such an environment furthered a deep appreciation for the arts, which Nicolas’ mother nurtured by encouraging his constant drawing. This alleyway is inspired by my fond memories of strolling through the narrow streets of small Italian towns. A few years ago, I spent several weeks living in Tuscany, where I gained a lot of experience painting the unassuming towns. They hold a special place in my heart, and I wanted to capture their unique charm and character that made those experiences so memorable. During my time in Italy, I was fascinated by how cars would navigate and park in the narrowest of alleyways. The car in this piece serves as a compositional anchor. Its presence adds a touch of realism and grounds the scene in the everyday, reminding viewers of the timeless nature of such places. Fred Ingram’s path to artistic success has been anything but conventional. From a young age, art was his sole refuge in school, thanks in part to the guidance of his teacher, Marion Hill, who introduced him to drawing. Even with a promising start, his journey was far from smooth. “Being expelled from St Martins was pivotal!” Fred recalls. Forced to make a living, he turned to graphic design, which became his financial backbone, allowing him to paint in his free time. His big break came unexpectedly: “Francis Bacon bought one of my paintings in a group show at the Birch & Conran Gallery in 1987.” Years later, Fred discovered his passion for landscape painting in The Fens, a place that inspired him and became central to his style. “I grew…

AS A WILDLIFE ARTIST, I have had the pleasure of drawing and painting many animals, but hares continue to inspire my work and remain a popular subject among artists. This beautifully fluffy snowshoe hare, set against its wintry white backdrop, offers an atmospheric and seasonally fitting subject for this oil painting. The snowshoe hare, also known as the varying hare or snowshoe rabbit, is native to North America. Its name comes from its large hind feet, which are perfectly adapted to snowy environments and add to its charm. These oversized, fluffy feet prevent the hare from sinking into the snow as it hops or walks, while fur on the soles protects it from freezing temperatures. THERE ARE SEVERAL ADVANTAGES to using acrylics in a watercolour style. The layers you apply are stable and won’t be reactivated by re-wetting the surface or by adding another layer on top. Open acrylics are the exception. Mistakes can easily be painted over, and the weightier paint allows greater contrast between diluted and neater layers. You can also paint on canvas in a watercolour style which saves on framing costs. The main reason I like using a watercolour style with acrylic is I feel more liberated when I can splash paint on more expressively and simply use neater paint to bring things together later on. I generally use neater paint for my acrylic artwork but, if you’re starting out, it’s useful to try various approaches. Diluting both watercolour and acrylic…

WHILST HE MAY HAVE BEEN CREATIVE AS A CHILD – drawing, playing with Lego and then the guitar – Tom Middleton didn’t complete his art A-Level, believing the process to be too theory-based. He didn’t create any artwork for another 10 years until he moved to London to chase a music career; producing and selling paintings became a way to supplement his musical aspirations. I’M A PAINFULLY SLOW WORKER and have rarely been able to persuade others to sit for me for extended periods of time. Because of that, my most considered and least rushed portraits have been of myself. In this seasonal self-portrait, painted in oil on canvas I wanted to demonstrate the careful control of tone, saturation and above all temperature, within a narrower palette to celebrate the effects of the cold natural light of a grey winter’s day on the colours of my face and head. As well as being a seasonal garment, I also became interested in how my grey jumper’s form lent itself to the overall composition, especially the way the offset oval of the collar gave some movement to the otherwise static symmetrical oval of my head. LAST MONTH I NEEDED SOMEONE to pose for my online watercolour class, and my friend Augustus stepped up. I soon realised he was an exceptional model, able to sit still while remaining alert. Here is the resulting painting (right). Since that initial session, I’ve painted him a few more times. For this article, I chose to depict him in profile. My goal was to delve deeply into the colours and tones that make up his face and bring depth to the painting. I also wanted to explore the particular shape of his features from the side and find all the angles and curves along the edge that make up his unique face.
