WHEN PLANNING THE 50th issue of Elska Magazine, a bimonthly publication featuring photos of ordinary queer men who live in different world cities, I knew I needed to choose a special destination. As the first Elska Magazine was made in Ukraine, it seemed right that I should return to the country. On my previous visit, although Russia had already invaded, the fighting had been confined to the east, away from Lviv, where I stayed, and I felt safe enough. This time, however, following Russia’s full-scale invasion, nowhere in the country was truly safe. But I felt strongly that I should honour Ukraine with my 50th issue.
