AUSTRALIA’S BEST PHOTOJOURNALISTS RECOGNISED AT NIKON WALKLEY AWARDS NEWSCORP’S Alex Coppel has been named Walkley Press Photographer of the Year at an event in Sydney over the weekend. The Walkley Awards for Excellence in Journalism are presented annually to recognise and reward the best in the craft, and extend across all facets of journalism. Finalists are selected by eminent journalists and photographers with overall winners judged by the Wakley’s Judging Board. Over 170,000 images were entered to this year’s Open competition, with over 100 photographers shortlisted in addition to the ten category winners. Each winner receives digital imaging equipment from Sony and will go on to compete for the Open Photographer of the Year title and a $5,000 (USD) prize. When I teach photography, a key question I always ask my students is “What’s the purpose of a telephoto lens”? Without fail, most will say something like “To get closer to the subject” or “To fill more of the frame with the subject”. And yes, while a telephoto lens will help you do this, for me that’s often not the reason I use one. With today’s high megapixel cameras, depending upon the end resolution you need, you can often “…get closer…” or “…fill more of the frame…” simply by cropping in postproduction, or putting a full frame lens on a cropped sensor camera (which really is a type of cropping, it’s just pre vs postproduction). Where do you look for inspiration and motivation? I like to take a walk around my local area and look at it with different eyes - I set myself a theme or topic and work from there. But this year, I’ll be taking part in the annual APS Photo Walk, which will be held on 14th May and has the theme Repair, Recover, Renew. The theme is open to personal interpretation by you as the photographer and has a wide theme - ‘In a world impacted by significant events through climate change, Covid-19 and natural disasters; nature and people show an incredible capacity to repair, recover and renew.’ APS organisers will be seeking imagery that focuses on the positive and captures the optimism of the future through the imagery. CANON PLANS TO RELEASE 32 RF-MOUNT LENSES OVER THE NEXT FOUR YEARS HERE’S music for Canon RF shooters’ ears the Japanese company has confirmed it plans to release 32 RF-mount lenses over the next four years. The confirmation was shared in Canon’s Corporate Strategy Conference 2022 presentation materials, which also revealed details of the company’s growth strategy for 2022 and beyond. Canon says it plans to expand the scale of its optical technology by ‘cultivat[ing] new users’ and ‘develop[ing] new products,’ and has hopes of hitting one trillion yen ($11 billion AUD) in imaging group sales a year. When I began my landscape photography journey, composition was one of the most difficult things for me to wrap my head around. We all see so many beautifully composed images online these days, and it’s hard to know where to start, what lens you should use, or the type of composition that works best for the scene in front of you - let alone the challenges of finding your own unique style! Remember that format called Micro Four Thirds? Ok, we’re teasing, but in an era of cheap full frame cameras, powerful APS-C options, and even cut-price Medium Format, Micro Four Thirds (M43) has felt like the lost child of the camera world for the last few years. It hasn’t helped that Olympus has been caught up in a very public sale and rebrand (it’s now known as OM System), while Panasonic has spent the last few years pushing its full frame L-Mount offerings instead. A LITTLE LOCAL EDIT “This beautiful Shy Albatross was happy to stay within perfect range for a split shot. I had noticed that the sky was starting to look quite ominous and stormy looking, which I was hoping would add drama to the photo. To get the shot, I gently entered the water out of my boat (a few kilometres from shore) and waited a few moments for the Albatross to come over to investigate”. Wow, how lucky are you - most people will never ever see an albatross, let alone photograph one. From a capture perspective there is not a lot I would do to change; it is very strong. Recently I’ve been reviewing the images I shot during a trip to Namibia, Africa, in 2010, including the panorama you see here. Anyone who has read these columns for a while will know how much I enjoy taking panos, but it’s not until recently that I began to consider what advances in image editing could mean for many of the panos I shot years back. In the last 10 years, image editing software has improved immensely and was I able to reprocess a handful of old multi-image panos, taking advantage of a decade of improvements in Lightroom. Photoshop offered stitching back then, but it had its limitations. 12 years later, images that were only OK before or needed a 'Photoshop touch up' suddenly have a new lease of life again…

Over the many years that I have been photographing I have devised a few techniques that help me to open my mind and get me into the groove of making images. These are some simple techniques that I’ll use when I arrive at a new location, or something I tap into if I’m feeling uninspired. Hopefully, they can help you too. 1 THE 20 PHOTO CHALLENGE The first idea is to stand in a five-metre square space and try to make 20 different photographs from that space. Ideally the images should feel unique and not just be records of the different views from that place. I took up photography as a hobby in late 2015. In the beginning I tried many different genres; however, over time I have developed a strong interest in nature, travel, and action event images. I have also developed a strong preference for monochrome shots. I have been very fortunate to be influenced by two outstanding photographers in Damian Caniglia and Lisa Kurtz. Their influences underpin two strategies I use with most of my photography. The first is ‘Think like a second photographer’ and the second, ‘Why this image, why now?’.
