When does 21 million euros sound like a bargain? When you buy something genuinely priceless. You may have read our story recently about Oskar Barnack’s personal Leica 0-Series No. 105 selling for 14.4 million euros ($21.7 million AUD) at auction (You can find the story here: https://bit.ly/3NHwQS4), which makes it officially the most expensive camera ever sold. VICTORIAN photographer Adam Haddrick’s portrait of Indigenous elder Cordy, titled Cordy in the Clouds, has won the 2022 National Photographic Portrait Prize Art Handlers’ Award. NPG Collection Officers Jess Kemister and Jacob Potter say they were ‘mesmerised’ by Haddrick’s portrait of Cordy, whose name means ‘Spirit of the Sunrise’ in the traditional language of the Tjungundji people of far North Queensland. Haddrick says he was equally as mesmerised when he first encountered Cordy in Charters Towers. “He shared his story and told me of a visit to India for an archaeology conference where the locals greeted him as a holy man. Col Roberts is ready with his camera, settled on the banks of a waterhole in the vast, rugged, and almost arid Kimberley in Western Australia. It is very early morning and he is waiting for sunrise. That is when flocks of multitudinous Gouldian Finches will arrive to drink, eat and bathe. He will have just a narrow window of opportunity to study them and take more of his revelatory portrait and action images. 1. The beast you feed. If you do decide to make a dynamic site with a regular blog and updates, then be aware that it can be a heavy task to keep it updated. Plan content in advance if you can. 2. In June 2019 I was spending a short holiday in Dubai with my family. Dubai is a fabulous destination with a myriad of opportunities for anyone in love with architecture photography; not only from the street level but from the height of the observation deck at Burj Khalifa as well. At 452m high (the equivalent to one and a half Eiffel Towers), the observation deck is one of the tallest in the world and gives access to a 360-degree view of the city of Dubai. What is that makes us photographers want to get up well before sunrise, walk for miles and take photographs with no guarantee you’ll even capture anything half decent? I have photographed landscapes more times than I can remember, starting at Carnarvon Gorge in Central Queensland over 40 years ago, and I’ll share a secret with you – even now, I still find landscape photography a tough challenge. 1. Study a bird species’ behaviour, and anticipate likely action. They are creatures of habit. 2. Know where to find birds and spend time scouting for locations. 3. Get to a location early and be prepared to put in a lot of hours. It is no good looking for birds in the middle of the day when the light is harsh and the birds are resting in the shade. 4. It’s a good example of how images captured in less than flattering light can often be recovered with a deft hand in the editing suite. Just a decade or so back, creating a photography website would have been an intimidating and expensive task for most of us. While most of us will probably never own an M-series Leica, we all owe the camera a nod of gratitude.
