No matter how careful you are, it’s inevitable that at some stage you’ll end up with dreaded dust spots on your camera sensor. Of course, you could always ignore the issue and just shoot away, knowing you’ll have a bit of post-production cloning to do when you get home, or maybe you have access to another camera body. But what if you don’t have these luxuries? Here are five techniques that’ll help you banish them for good next time you’re in the field. 1 SHOOT WIDE OPEN The thing about sensor spots is that normally they are caused by an object like dust that isn’t sitting on the camera’s light capturing photo sites per se, but on the protective glass that covers them. Because of this, what you normally see…

• Shoot using electric shutter if possible. Every time a mechanical shutter fires it creates friction which can cause small particles to be created. Shooting with the electronic shutter eliminates this contributing factor.• Only use prime lenses or zooms with a minimal bellows effect. The ‘bellows’ effect is what I call the phenomenon of air being sucked in and blown internally every time you change your zoom and is something I especially notice with zooms whose barrels extend out. To see what I’m talking about, try holding the rear end of your zoom (cap off and when not attached to the camera) close to your hand, and zoom in and out: You’ll feel some air move against your hand. 1. Rain is your friend for night street photography. Not only does it clear any haze, it pops colours and makes for great reflections off roads and windows2. Always have a small torchlight with you, or even better a headtorch. You will be amazed how useful it can be when you drop your tripod plate3. Try not to look like a photographer as you may attract unwanted attention. Also, be very careful if you’re shooting a military or government building. I’m in Kakadu. It’s 2022 and I’m thinking to myself how lucky I am to be out on Yellow Waters again. Every turn offers a new bird, plenty of crocodiles, and hopefully, a rare photo. After a couple of trips over two days, my group were ready for anything. The best settings were in use for action photography, and my well-trained trigger finger was ready. We spotted a mangrove heron, and the hunt was on. Our local guide Manoeuvred the boat perfectly, and just as we thought no shot was on due to the bird’s perched position on a busy branch, it plunged into the water. It’s important to know two things when thinking about spots on an image. Firstly, not all small spots on an image are caused by dust, and secondly not all spots are caused by something on the sensor. Spots on the sensor can come from other material like grease and water droplets, as well as lint, plastic, and metal shavings - the latter two usually coming from small parts being shaved off when you put on/take off your lens caps and/or change lens. Spots on an image but not from something on the sensor can also come from dust/objects on the back of your lens, and if big enough, in your lens or on your front element.…

I’ve been lucky enough to have reviewed almost every new Fujifilm camera in the last five years, and each time I open a Fujifilm box it’s kind of a feeling of coming home. Importantly; I don’t put that down to just how many of these cameras I’ve had in my hands but more so how they make you feel. At a time when cameras can do almost everything including making you a double-shot soy latte, it’s easy to pick up a modern camera and simply feel lost within the sub-menus and sub-menus of acronyms and auto-focus modes. Being a creative photographer isn’t easy, but being the model for a creative photographer even less so. In 2021, one of the set subjects for my camera club competition was “Replication” where we had to photographically replicate a famous artwork. Never one to do things the easy way, I decided to replicate one of my favourite paintings from the Pre-Raphaelite period, “Ophelia” by John Everett Millais. I talked my daughter Michelle into being my model and my friend Sandra made Ophelia’s dress. That was the easy part. I had to come up with a way to immerse my model in water without physically throwing her into a lake - Bunnings to the rescue! Back in March, Sydney was caught in the relentless deluge of an East Coast low weather system caused by La Niña. My husband Tim and I were making our way south on an emergency trip to Jervis Bay to help our kids whose house was flooding. Halfway down the coast they rang to say they had been evacuated and we couldn’t be of any immediate help. So, we stopped over in Kiama for the night as the surf forecast the next day was for a seven metre swell right on high tide - a photographer’s dream forecast! Landscape photography doesn’t just have to be about grand, epic vistas. Here’s how to capture the little things and bring a different element to your landscape portfolio. Landscape photography is commonly recognised as depicting scenes of ‘grand’ landscapes and wide sweeping vistas. The old saying "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" certainly applies to camera sensor spots. Although not aways preventable, if you're careful and adopt the following practices that I’ve picked up, as well as some from my go to camera technician, Wayne (from Melbourne’s Imaging By Design), you’re less likely to get dust spots and need fewer sensor cleans. • Switch your camera off before every lens change. In theory at least, this reduces the amount of static charge on your sensor and so should reduce the amount of dust it attracts• Clean around the mount before lens changes. If you have a soft brush or puffer, wipe off or blow around the lens mount before taking off the old lens• Make sure your camera is…

Many digital SLR and mirrorless cameras now have a function to clean the camera’s sensor using vibrations to shake particles off. If your camera has this function, make sure it is activated, so every time you turn the camera off (or on), the sensor gets cleaned. This doesn’t always work, and whilst this may get rid of dust ‘on’ the sensor (which is great), it doesn’t mean the dust is out of the camera body. Over time it can accumulate, increasing the risk of it falling back on the sensor in the future.…

Night-time photography has always been a major part of my work as a travel photographer, and a genre in which I’ve captured plenty of my own personal favourite images over the years too. In southeast Asia where I live, there’s a buzz on the streets around sunset, as people go about their regular evening street-food hunt. But as much as this is a great time to shoot, it’s not really what I would consider night photography, but more of a prelude to things to come. A few years back I was considering purchasing a drone as I’d occasionally get requests from clients for aerial images to accompany my more traditional err.. ‘land based’ photography. The drone offerings on the market at the time were OK – but to get really decent images you’d need to purchase the expensive higher end machines that were rapidly being superseded by the next generation. To solve the problem, I’d end up hiring a drone pilot (who would also do all the CASA form filling), or I’d stick my camera on the end of a fully extended monopod with a long cable release to get a bit more height.
